Good mornin' sorry I just opened my eyes but here goes.Great suggestion, thanks!
Wow, that was detailed and thorough! Appreciated!! So, I can have him outside for a week or 2, collect pollen and then dust the females? Or will the sacs open by then? Do I need to dry the pollen if I'm going to use directly (as in collect from outside, hose myself off, pull plant, dust 2 nugs, rinse and repeat for the other sister), or is it good as is?Good mornin' sorry I just opened my eyes but here goes.
Pollen collection? Easy. Parchment or wax paper, even aluminum foil will work. When you've got several pollen sacks ready to explode, just take a piece of aforementioned paper/foil, hold it in one hand like you're holding a serving tray, take the other hand, grab the plant, gently bend it over above the paper, and shake. If you've got a lot of fully developed pollen sacks it will dump a LOT of pollen onto the paper. You don't need a whole lot of pollen even for large breeding operations, a little goes a long way. You could easily get several grams of pollen just from doing this procedure once.
Do this several times throughout the male plant's life until you've collected as much pollen as you need.
Now, the important part - what to do next.
Make sure you get every piece of biomass out of the pollen you've collected. You will inevitably end up with small pieces of buds and leaves in your pollen. Use tweezers if need be to get every tiny piece out of it, this is important for storage reasons.
Next, simply put it in a Ziplock freezer bag (try to make sure it's brand name stuff, and freezer bags, you don't want thin cheap storage bags for long term storage) and then take a few grains or even a teaspoon of rice grains, doesn't really matter what kind, white/brown whatever, and add them to the bag. These will help absorb any moisture that might be in said bag. Then flatten it out and try to get as much air out of the bag as possible, before sealing it. Double bag it for extra protection, and then pop it in the freezer.
I've kept pollen for multiple years this way, never had a problem, always viable pollen. If you take it out and use some and want to put it back in the freezer, toss a few extra grains of rice in each time you open the bag and reseal it for storage, just to be safe.
And if you're truly lazy, you could cut little pieces of paper/foil in a circle that's about the same radius as the plant, cut a line from one edge to the center, and put it under the plant at the base, sort of like a Christmas tree blanket, and shape it so it will collect any falling pollen without letting it fall to the floor. This works, too, but honestly just shaking the plant will probably give you all the pollen you need right away without waiting.
Edit to add - oh, and don't do this anywhere near your female plants, take it outside on a calm day (no wind) or into a sealed room before you do this, and change your clothes, wash your hands, even take a shower, before you go near your females again, unless you want to have a bunch of seeds
