Not sure if it is a coincidence, but thought I'd share. Not sure if the whey had kept them away, but I wasn't seeing them while using the whey.

From a month ago. Had 4 total . They chew the leaves and also layed some eggs.

You don't have to capture them. If you scroll up a few post, you'll see the mating pair I captured on film. If you leave them alone, they will lay their egg casings around your home. I find casings all the time. Your yard has to be welcoming to them with plenty of food. If you use pesticides often, you may not see them ever. They eat a lot. Also, leave long dried stems up instead of cutting them down and discarding. Often times I find egg cases on dead flowers whose stems are long.

I do know you can purchase mantid egg cases, but unless you can verify they are native to your area, it is silly to do. Most of the egg cases sold in the US are not our native mantis.

Ohh i didnt know mantis egg cases are actually for sale...

But yeah i see plenty of egg cases in and around the garden and try to protect them from ants by the time they hatch.

I've seen babies hatching but its the first adult i see this season.
I had more when i had many flowers in the garden, so i'll make sure to have more variety of flowers in the future.

They are awesome to watch. I've got them in my greenhouse and my plants outside. I've posted many a pic but they really don't eat that many bugs to make it worthwhile. I get aphids and spider mites of Biblical proportions at times and "washing them off" ain't gonna do it🤣 so I don't have any choice if I want to grow my own I've got to spray, mainly neem oil. And even then I get these bastards

and I'm spraying minimum once a week. With dozens of moth species laying eggs each and every day I may have to up it to twice a week. It's either that or give up a percentage of flower. Not spraying I end up with moth shit half eaten buds🤔 which i don't really care for😉

This is a red shoulder bug. Sap suckers but rarely in numbers on plants.

but a few. I usually just knock them off and rarely see them when spraying with neem oil or spinosad.

It is indeed a fine line keeping the beneficial populations in tact while lowering the bad bugs like aphids, spider mites and at harvest time moth larvae.

I had 2 BBHP in the greenhouse, outgrowing their space and both fighting the bugs and flipped one by taking it outside and the beneficials really knocked down the numbers but I still have to spray it, along with my cucumbers and tomatoes. More for fungus reasons for those two and tomato horn worm but same neem spray and one of the reasons I use it.

And no, I've never tasted any residual neem in my buds. Dissipates pretty quick and I always wash down the plants before harvest and let them dry.

Yep those caterpillars are the scourge of the garden.

Dont you use BT?
I only sprayed twice this season and yesterday first time on the sativas.

BT works well on the young ones but much less on the adults.

For some reason its been pretty easy to catch them this season, almost every morning and evening they go out for a walk on the buds and leaves and its easy to spot them.

And what do you use as an emulsifier for the neem oil?
Havent used neem this season, gotta get some for next year...

My homemade Amnesia x auto Sour 60 is the first one harvested.
Quicker than the mother Amnesia, the auto Sour 60 took off 10-15 days flowering time.
Still smells like the Hy-pro Amnesia but sweeter.
Nice fast version experiment.

Curious smells of mango and spices, makes me think of Indian food which i like a lot.

Needs another week at least.
Only plant that had aphids on the lower leaves.

Pollinated a lower bud with a male Panshir from Chucky, would like to grow some of those next season.

just mix with water but I'm going to start purchasing Pure Neem oil

and mixing in a tsp of Dawn ultra. It's a lot better priced and should work just as well.

Neem will kill moth larvae and the eggs laid but gotta get 'em early😉

You can clearly see the moth egg waiting to hatch and eat that flower stem. I wonder how many eggs I can't see in the same condition on every other flower? I've used bt as well

Once a week and didn't control them any better then neem. But a combo of bt, spinosad and southern ag fungicide killed just about everything in vegg🤣 3 lab grown bio insecticides🤔

I don't know but I gotta up my spray game or it won't be worth my time or effort to grow.
