Im growing GDP for the first time and some buds came out very nice and thick. Looking like they should look, while others came out with purple leaves covered in THC (a good thing) but there is a lot of space between the leaves and the bud is barely visible from the outside. Once I trim the leaves there will be nothing leaft but a tiny bud? any clues how to get consistant thick buds all through the plant(s)?

Sounds like you could use some supplimental lighting if growing indoor. Also you could use the scrog technique so more branches see more light. Those leafy non buds are called larfae or larf it is expected a few of the unders will look like this. It means the plants energy went to the tops because they had more light. Save all your leaf trim that has crystals to make hash . Theres many methods some are simple like pressed kief

How intense is your lighting? Wattage? How far is the bulb kept from the top of the main cola? Bringing your bulb closer, within reason depending on bulb wattage, can result in thicker calyxes (the flower part).

What these guys/gals are all talking about is called "canopy control". Once you learn what it is, how to apply it (many different methods), then you'll reduce or eliminate those little time-waster dud buds.
