A Lower Hutt man requires surgery for serious burns due to what police believe was a cannabis oil explosion on his kitchen stove.
The man was taken to hospital last night and requires surgery for what police describe as "serious" burns after the explosion at the Butler St, Lower Hutt house shortly after 9pm last night.
Wellington Crime Squad head Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said police had conducted a scene examination of the property today.
"We believe that a cannabis oil production was in the process of being undertaken."
Police would be speaking to the 33-year-old man once he had recovered from surgery, McKee said.
A fire crew was called to the house. The explosion was small and appeared to have involved a gas stove, police said last night.
McKee said making cannabis oil was a risky process.
"It is volatile and we do deal with a few of these people who unfortunately caught up in the wrong side of an explosion. It is a pretty dangerous operation."
