A MOOGERAH man has faced court after he unwittingly grew thousands of marijuana plants.

To help him self-medicate, David Leslie McKay secretly planted five cannabis plants on a 3m x 3m plot located on his neighbour's farmland.

But when his humble weed crop was discovered years later, the cannabis had reproduced to about 9,270 plants and seedlings.

The illegal plants were believed to have been growing between December 2011 and 2013.

At Ipswich District Court, McKay pleaded guilty to charges of producing and possessing dangerous drugs.

The 55-year-old was also charged with one count of unlawfully entering farmland.

Defence barrister Geoffrey Seaholme said while the cannabis plants were high in number, many of them were seedlings less than 2.54cm tall.

Mr Seaholme said his client had neglected the plants for such a long time that they had self-pollinated and spread without him knowing.

"The crop was never grown for commercial use," Mr Seaholme told the court.

"It was simply a few plants that had just got out of control."

McKay was sentenced to 18 months jail and released on immediate parole for all charges.
