Are they universal? do i have to switch out sockets or are they one size fits all as long as i have the appropriate ballast?

Mogul base sockets are the same for all HID bulbs 250w to 1000w and i think there is even a 1500w out there that fits the standard mogul base socket.

i think the one i got is. if it wasnt and i thru my 1000 w hps in there is that bad for the bulb? is testing it out gonna blow it if its not the correct socket?

I think Bull Trout's gotcha on this one. My limited experience says that it's the part that the bulb actually screws into that you have to pay attention to, otherwise they can be wired up just fine. If the socket doesn't match your bulb, it just won't screw in.
