Folks worry about Chlorine, well you do realize that sterile Hydro dwc/nft/rdwc often use a product like CC Clear Line/ Athena Cleanse/EZClone Clear Rez/etc which uses HCL/KCLO as a sanitizer right? Its unstable which is why it works, and will offgas to minimal level fairly rapidly... Get some test strips from your local pool supply 0-600ppm. Honestly folks, If its the water you are concerned with, I suggest looking in the mirror first to see what may be start point 1 in grow issues (some do have attrocious water admittedly. but I doubt its the Cl).

Let it sit out a day the chlorine will evaporate off yes it WILL Kill your benificial buddies

I’ll start by saying I grow in soil.

R/O is just not necessary. If you use RO you are just stripping out all the minerals your plant needs. Now you have to supplement calmag. Why waste a bunch of water and money?

I have a thriving outdoor veggie garden that gets exclusively tap water and I live in Los Angeles. Our water is terrrrrrrible. Yet, I have plenty of diversity of bacterial and fungal networks in my soil. This is why I stopped using RO for my cannabis.

Chloramine and chlorine will do mild damage but you will have the population bounce back quickly.

Those boogie filters are unfortunately more of a gimmick than anything. They don’t last long and they don’t remove a majority of the chlorine/chloramine. I’ve seen people stack 2-3 of them before they get the ppm they want.

The RO in my house is for drinking water and for the occasional AACT.

Nutrient’s carry enough minerals and soil generally has dolomite lime added as a ph buffer. The lack of minerals in RO is of no concern.

A big concern with tap water is some contain high amounts of sodium, some municipalities actually use sodium salts as buffer like sodium bicarbonate etc.

and i 100% agree with you on the chlorine/chloramine

That’s true. When I first started growing I was using RO. I had issues until I upped my feed and all my deficiencies went away. A good nutrient blend will contain everything you need.

On the flip side, you can save some money on nutes by using those high PPM tap water to your advantage and running less nutes.


I haven’t heard anyone bring up the sodium content before. I’m curious, what do you think is the best way to handle the sodium build? I wonder if calcium phosphate from bonemeal would bind up those salts.

Thats over my paygrade lol… i choose to eliminate them. Sodium over 20ppm can start to affect the plants although maybe not visually noticeable the further it rises the more of an issue it can become.

Cutting tap with RO or just going with RO in the case of high sodium is my recommendation.

Oh jeez, my city water report says the sodium is 90ppm. 😂 Los Angeles is fucked up.

Yeah not saying it wont allow you to grow but you will very likely see an improvement if you can get those numbers down imo

LADWP is about as dirty as it gets. Been to their headquarters and it was a joke with this union only does this and that union only does this. They got into trouble with either a bottling company or a beverage company about higher levels of contamination in their water than as required by EPA. They test before it goes into their want to be clear well of a lake of plastic balls. I tried to find the content but it looks like it got washed away.

That unfortunately doesn’t surprise me. This city is held together with duct tape, glue, and minor corruption.

Im reading conflicting opinions on this sight. Some say ro water caused deficiencies. Is it fair to say its probably because they were under feeding with nutes?

If their nute mix has the core minerals added then you shouldn’t have deficiencies with RO unless underfeeding.


My tap water contains too much calcium and creates deficiencies/lockouts. I’m going to use langbeinite to correct this. I’m trying to work with what I got instead of leaning on RO.

Almost 95% of the time a deficiency is not a lack of a nutrient. It’s generally EC, PH, nutrient ratios, environment or watering. I can count on 1 hand how many times i have seen an actual deficiency from lack of
