how many generations of cuttings/clones can you go before you will see degradation in quality, yield, vigor etc.???

OR

Do they even degrade?

for example, if i had a cut of some legendary strain but have had it for over 10 years how close would it be to the original. Would it be the same? Would stressing the plant out be detrimental to its genetics for successive generations??

Marijuana clones from a plant

If you have got a female plant from a good seed, then its better to clone, as you will get the best from that...
You can clone it as many times, its not going to affect its potency.
also your clone will be a female...
once the plant has got 12/12 flowering cycle you can confirm it as female, then proceed it..Do it as you are going to do a surgery, if you have a kit its better or else, use a clean blade, and the mother plant should not get hurt..
regards...

I agree with Gartner. Jorge Cerventez's growers bible has a section about clones being able to be cloned again an indefinite number of times

No doubt, there was an Overgrow username oldtimer that spoke of having a mother for like 7 years.
