Just curious as I am a new grower. Everything I've read says top straight across so there is less of a wound, but clone at 45 degree angle so there is more surface area for roots. I'm planning on trying to use my top as a clone. I figure I can do the cut straight and then cut at a 45 degree angle. I'm just curious behind the wisdom here more than anything. Am I asking for trouble to top the plant at 45 degrees?

Some people pinch the tops with their fingernails. A nice, clean cut is certainly better than that. A healthy plant should easily deal with being topped, even if not perfect. The clone, however, should have a 45º cut because that provides better flow of water while it's rooting. I just cut the top and then cut the clone. I don't do much cloning, though.

Use sterilized cutting tools.
