I am thinking about using strait coconot in smart pots... Number 1 is that a good idea and 2 how often would I water on a flood and drain table?
Thank you in advance!

Strait coconot ?
Thats not a good idea cause it mostly contents a lot of salt.
It needs a special treatment, for example you have to handle it with hot steam and buffer it, with that you need Mg and Ca.

CocoNot -- I had never heard of it. From the manufacturer:

Thank you for your interest in the new CocoNot product! CocoNot is a soilless medium made from the bark of sustainably harvested redwood trees blended with the fibers of a Kapok fruit. Utilizing a specific layer of the redwood bark and using a proprietary method to grind the material into 6 different size/shaped particles of medium we have created a structure made with the sole purpose to grow plants. We found by adding the fiber of a Kapok fruit we were able to add additional buoyancy, resilience, and drainage. This fiber is made of mostly Lignin: Lignin is generally associated with reduced digestibility of the overall plant biomass, which helps defend against pathogens and pests. A perfect air to water ratio, PH'd and buffered for optimal nutrient uptake CocoNot is free of excess salts and is providing amazing results for growers… Don’t get left in the coir! CocoNot does not need to be rinsed but should be fed water only for the first 5-10 days. Keep in mind that this material dry's quickly and should be watered regularly... if more water retention is desired ad VermiBlend. General Hydroponics will be offering the CocoNot product pre-filled in their 8" Coco-Tek Basket's. This makes life so easy... No more guessing how many bags to buy, no hassle or mess when filling your pots just plant water and grow! Works great for flood and drain gardens and spring starts! Many hugely successful gardens are being grown with CocoNot and we are excited for you to experience it!!

Is that the stuff you are asking about, LBZ? I've never used it, just posting the description up here for others who may miss the distinction between coconut and coconot.

Yeah that is it... Thank you for posting that up... Supposed to be oK to use strait from what I heard from the representative who was at my local hydro store. He said if I wanted to hold a little more water to add some soil.

I also bought something similar. It's coconut coir advanced grow medium and I'm also using smart pots. Would this grow medium be alright to use straight. I'm also working on a compost pile to start making my own organic soil mix. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
