Hey everyone,

I'm trying to compile a list of cannabis plant issues. I'm a data science major, something I moved into after being in cannabis cultivation for many years. I am wanting to compile a list, so I can collect images of these issues. I then would like to use these images to train a machine learning model that can identify these issues. It will be a lot of work, but I think it could be a tool that might be able to help our community a great deal. Here is a list of issues that I have compiled off the top of my head. I would like some feedback from you guys to add things that I am missing, or get rid of things that may not be a factor for the growth and cultivation of cannabis. Here is my list:

Diseases:

  1. Powdery Mildew
  2. Downy Mildew
  3. Gray Mold (Botrytis cinerea)
  4. Fusarium Wilt
  5. Root Rot (Pythium, Phytophthora)
  6. Leaf Septoria
  7. Alternaria
  8. Verticillium Wilt
  9. Tobacco Mosaic Virus
  10. Cannabis Mosaic Virus

  1. Spider Mites
  2. Aphids
  3. Thrips
  4. Whiteflies
  5. Fungus Gnats
  6. Caterpillars
  7. Leafhoppers
  8. Broad Mites
  9. Russet Mites
  10. Hemp Russet Mites

Deficiencies:

  1. Nitrogen Deficiency
  2. Phosphorus Deficiency
  3. Potassium Deficiency
  4. Calcium Deficiency
  5. Magnesium Deficiency
  6. Sulfur Deficiency
  7. Iron Deficiency
  8. Manganese Deficiency
  9. Zinc Deficiency
  10. Copper Deficiency
  11. Boron Deficiency
  12. Molybdenum Deficiency
Stresses:

  1. Light Stress (Light Burn)
  2. Heat Stress
  3. Cold Stress
  4. Overwatering
  5. Underwatering
  6. Nutrient Burn
  7. pH Fluctuations
  8. Transplant Shock
  9. Wind Burn
  10. Environmental Stress (humidity fluctuations, extreme weather

Nutrient Toxicities:

  1. Nitrogen Toxicity
  2. Phosphorus Toxicity
  3. Potassium Toxicity
  4. Calcium Toxicity
  5. Magnesium Toxicity
  6. Sulfur Toxicity
  7. Iron Toxicity
  8. Manganese Toxicity
  9. Zinc Toxicity
  10. Copper Toxicity
  11. Boron Toxicity
  12. Molybdenum Toxicity
Other Toxicities:

  1. Chlorine Toxicity (from chlorinated water)
  2. Salt Buildup (from excessive use of fertilizers or poor irrigation practices)
  3. Heavy Metal Toxicity (from contaminated soil or water sources)
  4. Pesticide or Herbicide Toxicity (from improper application or contamination)
  5. Chemical Residue Toxicity (from exposure to industrial pollutants or toxins)

I’m new to all this myself so unfortunately can’t add anything to the list. Would just like to say though that a tool like this would be extremely helpful, especially to newbies.

Excited to see this flourish. Do you have any external blogs etc so that people can follow along as you progress?

I don't but that would be a good idea.

Thank you I'll add them to the list. Assorted grubs and caterpillars.

Grow with legit living soil and most of these don't exist.

Gonna be hard to get any real information unless you do everything yourself or have some seriously trusted growers. Most deficiencys can be caused by a million things. Tends to be the reason why people struggle to get accurate help. Like oh wow I'm getting a phosphorus deficiency, I better water in some feed. But in reality your overwatering and your plant is incapable of taking in phosphorus because of it. And there's a plethora of other reasons you could run into issues like that.

I don't know if your just compiling a list or also gathering some kind of data with the problems but I always want to throw that speal out because newer growers will think issues are simply 1+1=2 but it just isn't like that.

Not just a list. The actual dataset will be comprised of images of the issues, with metadata(labels) of the issues. That way the model can learn from the image, and than identify the issue with the metadata when it is doing the learning. I see what you're saying. I've only spent about 20 minutes going through old posts, but the images and diagnosis is very inconsistent. I could leverage a type of transfer learning. Where the model is pre-trained on images of these same issues, but from other plants. I have a few articles about similar models being produced to do something similar for cashews. Maybe I could get my hands on their dataset(unlikely). Pre-train the model, and then try to run images from the forum through it so it can teach itself about what these issues look like on cannabis plants.
