A ppfd meter is more a tool for repeatability, not all cultivars can take the same amount of light, in the end reading your plants leaves is the best tool you can have.

I have a problem reading my plants lol. I definitely get different plants prefer different environments. I just feel like having the numbers, taking notes, and looking at my pictures might show an overall trend that I could learn to identify with my eyes as time goes on. A learning crutch lol.

Plant reading, it really comes with a lot of time and experience with all the different types and varieties of cannabis, mainly redundancy and great notes, which it sounds like you keep…..

It will help for sure! And with a bit of practice, experience and time you you learn easily to read them.
I use an app called photone that I calibrated against my lights ppfd chart, its pretty accurate for my android sansung s10e phone. I use it for a ball park and to repeatability, but in the end reading the plants is the most important.

yeah i loved the numbers in the beginning because i feel its something i could trust. you know science and shit. now im a leaf whisperer

Mikedin has plants right now that are literally an inch away from the light. They love it. So crazy.
My close tops bleached and curl away. No foxtailing yet but they definitely would like it lower based on those signs. But if I raise it, I worry about the overall plants not getting enough. Too much or too little? With my uneven canopy I probably can't achieve just right...goldilocks problems lol.

Leaf 🍃 whisperer I like that! Yes the numbers definitely help ease my newbie fears a little. Research has helped a bit but hands on experience is what will really get me there over time.

Another grower here, finished out a sick frostette run, at %30 power. I finish the majority of my runs at anywhere from 60-70% power just fyi

And I pulled well over a gram and a half per watt……

I have the same phone! Yeah I had heard about the apps a bit. I'll have to get it and try just to see.

These plants are so foreign to me it's like learning a new language. Watching, reading, searching none of that really prepared me for them in person lol. Maybe if I had previous gardening experience it would be different.

So the plants leaves will lay down before lights out if the light is too hot, if it’s not enough the leaves will reaching like crazy, at lights out. just right. They stay basically horizontal except after feedings.

Hmmm I usually water right before lights out, that's when I take my progress pictures. Honestly they seem to be reaching up or laying pretty flat usually. Well besides the tippy top colas that have those little curled under leaves that seem permanent. They haven't been to saggy leafed since veg really. The infrared thermometer reads around 75-78° leaf temps.

Right when lights come on I check for dew and condensation since up until last week it was 80% lol. Even at that time they seem pretty perky. No feeding since I just add water to the EarthBox tube. They seem to like the light besides those tippy tops but honestly I don't have the experience to say.

Just keep posting, the brigade will let you know. Sounds like they are stoked. But for a new grower a light app or tool is definitely needed to make sure you at least in the proper ballpark for cannabis nutrition ppfd wise. If it’s a genuine concern and you feel like it affecting totals. But fact is if you successfully harvest your first run, you are ahead of the curve.

This is @Mikedin s grow, look at the proximity to the light……some times, they are just willing…..

I'm really thankful for all the insights and help I have received from everyone! I plan on downloading one of those apps to see what it says. I do have the light manufacturers ppfd numbers at a few different heights but not in the exact range I need lol.

I feel like I'm closing in on the finish line but things could definitely still go more sideways lol. The drying and curing will be my next hurdle if I make it to harvest. Wonder how seeded they really are? Can you tell by looking at them during flower how many seeds they have?
