DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A Dayton couple is charged federally with selling pot, then using the proceeds to buy properties to sell more.
A federal grand jury indicted Dennis Hunter, 51, and Sivan Hunter, 45, with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and money laundering.
U.S. Attorney Carter Stewart says the couple is accused of selling the pot and using the profits to buy homes in the Dayton area. He says they then used those properties to store pot and sell it.
Prosecutors also charge that the couple bought expensive cars with the pot profits, as well as home renovations and an 80 inch television.
“The laundering of illegal drug profits is as important and essential to drug traffickers as the very distribution of their illegal drugs. Without these ill-gotten gains, the traffickers could not finance their organization,” said Kathy A. Enstrom, Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation, Cincinnati Field Office. “IRS Criminal Investigation is committed to taking the profit away from the drug traffickers and putting those individuals in jail.”
Dennis Hunter is in custody. Sivan Hunter is out of jail on her own recognizance.
They face anywhere from 10 years in prison up to life.
