Does topping more than once increase yield?

soo you have 5 branches you remove 3 and now you have more?
Yes, it causes the plant to produce more side branches and the LST enhances the light getting to those branches.
Let me clerify
I have say 5 nodes, I cut off the above the 4th (that would be 3 branches gone) the one node (abranch on each side) and the actual top.

where did you get that the plant starts producing tops at accelerated speed when main top is cut?
the lst part is correct when you bend the plant and let the direct light hit the leaf it will get motivated to grow big and produce new tops

as for the any branch that was cut you basically removed 3 branches that could become 6 12 24 48....and all of them can branch its impossible to get more from topping.
topping gives symmetry and control but not more branches

Im sorry if I offended you.
If I remove one top, I get two shoots. Maybe Im explaining wrong,
deepest apologies.

not offended your just wrong you have a top that goes up and 2 side branches .with no topping 2 side branches grow and the main top grows all 3 of them produce new branches with topping you still have the same side branches just the top branch is non existant.soo your producing -1 branches now

Topping, LST and to some extent supercropping all break apical dominance and redirect auxins. They do it by different mechanisms so one is high stress, and one is low.

Your right but they accomplish it by different means. Topping or taking the dominant fan is hormonal disruption, LST is directional signaling... one is a slow moving ship and the other is much more instantaneous. Different approaches to accomplish what you're trying to do, stimulate more growth among more branches, both do work and there are different situations where you'll prefer one over the other, scrog being an obvious one.

Could I point out that topping/not topping might be secondary to feeding, light, breathing, other things in yeild? Mind filling out this form?

1️⃣ Grow Medium & Root Environment

Select ONE primary method and answer that section fully.

Soil

  • Soil brand or type (bagged, homemade, living soil, etc.):
  • Pot size (gallons):
  • Pot type (plastic, fabric, ceramic, etc.):
  • Drainage (extra holes, riser, saucer, runoff collected or not):
  • Amendments mixed into soil (perlite, worm castings, bone meal, etc.):

5️⃣ Plant Info

(Context matters.)

  • Strain(s):
  • Auto or Photoperiod:

6️⃣ Current Issue (If Any)

  • What problem are you seeing:
  • When did it start:
  • Has anything changed recently:
  • Photos included? (They should be.)

Final Note (Optional but Encouraged)

“If you don’t know an answer, say ‘unknown’ — guessing wastes everyone’s time, including your plant’s.”

To each their own, do your own research, but dont call someone wrong because you dont believe it.

I apologize if I rubbed anyone the wrong way and wish to put this all behind us.

Can we all be "Buds" again?

Do a simple google search

Not a hater, Im friendly.
No hate, just my experience.
Trust me....I only started with 4 limbs on that topped plant. That's all.!!
We're good brother, just sharing info on what I've witnessed. I'd agree on average, but not necessarily all plants do better being topped multiple times

I agree 100%. I personally would top at the most two times and then only on a photoperiod. I top my autos only once. I was just saying that in my research and my experience topping increases yeild, nothing more!

No hate to anyone. If what someone does works for them, then go for it.

Our yields have been... pretty bad. Not even sure what the yield on an indoor photo should be if done well.

But... we've been lollipopping and topping once. Should we try topping twice? Someone suggested that to me and says it will give more weight if you top 2-3 times but no more.

Is that true? How many times should we top and how much weight should be expected off a well grown indoor photo?
Ok my guy let’s break it down. You’re indoors. Yeild is not where you want it to be. Can you share a pic of your last crop prior to cut?

What are you growing? Are you topping and lollypoping at the same time? If so that’s a fuck ton of stress on the plant and will slow it down.

How is light intensity? What’s your co2 and if you aren’t supplementing how ofen are you exchanging air in the room? Co2 is the limiting factor for photosynthesis in indoor grows.

Also what are you trying to accomplish in what space with how many plants? Are you topping to get cuts for next round or just topping because you heard about it on the net?

If you want to answer any of these questions I can probably help you get those yields up.

big one topped 2 times and vegged 2 months small one never topped vegged 1 month

left one had 50g more....

main top you remove with topping
1773386903735

topped one all nugs small.
it has its advantages better airflow less chance to mold each bud is almost the same size. easier to train but topping costs time

i am not saying topping is bad i do it too but you cant say topping gives more branches it just doesnt

problem with just lst is you pull the plant to a corner and sooner or later you hit a wall now you think doesn't matter i will just pull it back but while its growing the main top its allsoo growing 8 new tops that you have to pull somewhere and driving back to the other side crosses all of them and it becomes a huge mess real fast.

None of these six clones (4 left side, 2 right side) have been topped. They were cut 31 Dec (72 days), and flipped on 23 Jan (49 days). They only vegged for 16 days. The 2 cali blues on the right side have 3 scrog nets (only 2nd grow using nets). Yes it's a huge mess 👍🤣

this goes back to my first post if you want the biggest yield just put a shit tone of plants inside :D main cola is a monster

Good Morning,

Agreed, more plants will produce more than fewer plants.
?

2. Controlled Trial (Autoflower Cannabis)

A controlled experiment on 48 plants comparing topped vs non-topped plants found:

TreatmentYield
No topping270 g/plant
Topped255 g/plant

  • Topping slightly reduced yield (~6%)
  • But increased cannabinoid concentration slightly.

What Research and Trials Suggest

1. Topping vs LST (physiology)

Topping removes the apical meristem, which temporarily stops growth while the plant redistributes hormones.

LST does not damage the plant, it only bends stems.

Effect on hormones:

  • Topping → auxin source removed → branching after recovery
  • LST → auxin redistributed by gravity/light → branching without recovery pause

So LST keeps photosynthesis and growth uninterrupted.

Yield Comparisons (general findings)

Training methodYieldRecovery time
No trainingbaselinenone
LSToften +5–20%none
Topping0 to +15%3–10 days
Topping + LSThighest yields in many trialsmoderate

Reason:

LST creates multiple tops while keeping growth continuous.
