I finished my first indoor harvest and I have the buds in mason jars. I opened the jars yesterday and smelled them and they smelled like olives. Does anyone have an idea why they smell like this?

Check out the curing threads in the harvesting and drying section. With a proper cure buds go from smelling just okay to out of this world.

Were the Mason jars previously used for canning olives ?

Just a thought. They might not have been sterilized afterwards.

I am laughing my ASS off, that was the first thing I thought, too!

Please, tell us you didn't use old olive jars to store your weed in, please! If so, allow me to prevent you from making the following mistakes:
Old pepper jars (pepperoncini, banana peppers, whatever)
Salsa jars
Peanut butter jars
OLIVE JARS ( :giggle )
oh fuck, now I can't stop giggling...
Caper jars
anything pickled
anything hot
anything strong
anything nuts
I can't stop giggling now.
:giggle

Sometimes when you leave your jar sealed and your buds are sweating the moisture out they smell a bit different, but not olives. If you have a small hygrometer put in the jar and seal it, check the % of humidity in the jar. You might have put your buds in to the jar phase too early. I think 60% is a good number to toss them into the jars. Make sure you "burp"(read:open) your jars till your buds feel like they aren't spongy. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Crom

PS
Don't use any of the jars mentioned lol
