So I’ve already harvested a couple plants this season and the last couple years I’ve had no luck keeping the smell I lose it almost completely. So this year I got a grow tent and attempted making a dry tent. I’ve been running it as close to 60/60 as I can i can really get much lower than 55rh at times but never go over 65rh and the temp stays about spot on. So far dry times been 7-8 days. Bud looks great and is really sticky but upon hitting the jars or before I take the bud out to trim up for jars the smell is basically gone or slight grass.
I’m curious if I’m just screwing the drying environment up or if maybe I’m not getting the plants ready to be dried properly like wet trim, dry trim etc. I’ve been processing plants into branches and removing everything except sweet leafs. Should I be trying to dry the whole plant or bigger branches minus the bigger fan leaves or just leave everything to slow the dry as much as possible? I’ve added some pics so u can see what I’m working with and suggest how i should approach harvesting these. Thank you for any help.

Also struggling with drying, my first time. My understanding is the smell is chlorophyll and should fade after a long enough cure. Light exposure and heat can effect it tho.

I do hope it goes away after cure or I’ll be smoking some hay sticks lol

Correct it is the chlorophyll burning up, which is vital to smooth smoke. Sometimes when you let it cure properly it will bring terps back out ✌️

This past harvest I cut into branches and hung to dry removing some fan leaves. I let it dry for 9 days. Didn't want to go longer because they felt dried out.

From what I've heard you leave everything on the plant and try for a slow dry upwards of 2 weeks or more.

The temps here were too warm though. It smelled grassy until I cured for a month. Still didn't get a great smell but it wasn't grassy.

Thats just my experience. I'm still learning. Others on here should be able to tell you more.

YEAH SCORE A POINT FOR THE NEW GUY

Hope you’re right, they smelled like an orange grove. Now it’s just like horse food. I didn’t fully trim them, they were airy nugs that got really dry so was hoping that would help with the cure.

So there is way too much to explain but some key notes, different terps and whatnot get destroyed at different temps starting around 60F and up. Alcohol esters like skunk smell occasionally can be, will NEVER stay they die with the plant. Drying way too fast and hot temps can destroy the smell and flavor. However after a long cure if they are any left it brings them out. Weed is not in its truest form until 3 to 6 months of proper curing IMHO ✌️

My first real outdoor grow this year. I chopped a plant early. Did a bud wash. Hung for 7 days, 68⁰ and between 50-60% humidity. Smelled like hay for awhile. They've been in jars for 2 days now. They smell absolutely dank. The smoke THC is low though because there were still lots of clear trichs when cut. I call it pretendica. Wanted to let you know if you know your trichs were on point, your smoke should eventually smell like dank cannabis. If you aren't getting that after a year or two after harvesting, something isn't going right somewhere. Are you using hygrometer in dry tent and the jars? I did a wet trim and hung branches, not entire plant.

most buds will get grassier and grassier until you jar and give it a couple burps then let it sit for bit.

tbh, i totally wing my harvests and just keep loose parameters in check most the time. under 72f. under 65% rh. Dark. i try to make it take 10 days or so to dry. Never had issues getting the smell to come in heavy so long as i burped out the moisture to the proper point before letting it sit. I dont even have a hygrometer or temp gauge in my indoor flower tent and decide when a particular flower si ready to sit entirely by feel lol

ive even left buds hanging at about 68f 60% rh for an extra week before i got to them, still burped and stank up just fine so long as i shit canned the air circulation once the branches hit the same stable RH as the environment. ive left branches up like that for 3-4 weeks, and they were still just fine for trim and jar, if not stinkier faster then the earlier jarred stuff. The trick there is to completely stop air circulation once they hit a point that spores cannot germinate, and keep that temp and RH stable

PRETENDICA

My dry got drrrrry. Like up to 90 at times, hardly even above 30%. So I’m not too optimistic.

Will say tho, it’s in knock off grove bags now and it’s up to 55% humidity which is kinda cool.

I've used the term for years. Now, I know why weed can taste and smell so good and not get you high or as high as it should. I know the science behind it. Also, I now know that commercial operations cut at one time, regardless of what trichs look like.

Listen, there was a time where all these gadgets weren't available and people didn't have the ability to control their drying environment. Your smoke will be just fine if you trichs were cloudy. May not taste or smell like you want, but it will get you high. Glad.your bags are working out for you. Good to hear.

needs to be on t shirts. I once bought the most expensive eighth for my birthday. It was gorgeous but didn’t taste like anything or really phase me. Last time for that lol.

I am sure. I keep telling myself. Regardless how much info I read or interpret or ‘know’ I won’t believe it until I get to the other side of it

My outdoor I wing it, thr indoor is all climate controlled dry

you can let buds get cracker crispy dry, and often so long as theres a tiny bit of moisture left in the stem inside the flower, itll still come back quite nice as it sits. Especially if it came back to 55 on its own. You prob nailed that timing for that particular drying environment even if you damaged some more volatile terps in the process, and i bet itll smell real nice in jar within a week even still, especially if indica dominant. May produce a little extra lung phlegm because it dried faster than chlorophyl breaks down, but thatll prob go away within a couple weeks most likely as it sits, so long as that humidity bumped back up into the 50s. Getting that chlorphyl broken down is as important to smoke quality as flushing when bottle feeding imho

there have been many new growers ive communicated with over the years who got disheartened on their first jar, and just never broke into it after burping, they moved on.

Then reopened the jar for shits n giggles many months to a year later to discover their weed was great weed lmao.

usually happens when they bust it open to give some away free, then they go.... hey wait a minute.... 🤔

thats actually the story of my first jar of home grown too lol. Way back in 2007/2008 or so
