I've heard that Diatomite is a safer alternative to perlite. I've also heard that it eliminates Thrips(in the larval stage) and Fungus Gnats if you use a 1 in top and bottom layer, provides your plants with silica, and boosts your plants SAR(System Aquired Resistance aka immune system).

I'm sure there are more, but I haven't heard any cons, except one; that in large amounts it diminishes taste to almost nothing which makes me think it also hinders smell.

I was thinking of using diatomite as a 1/2 in layer on the top and bottom and also mixing it into the soil. What does everyone think on doing that? Are there any other bad qualities in Diatomite

Any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks

yes its lovely but the stuff i use is just called silica, i mix it 1 part silica 1 part perlite and 2 parts soil mix #4 ...........although i think your diatomite is around the same thing.....all diatomites are not created equal.
ps---~ i wouldnt discontinue the use of perlite for diatamite i would make them work together.
