I need to know what size/type of wire to buy at home depot later today. Here's what I'm doing... I want to run the power cord for my sentinel hph8 light controller about 50' to my dryer plug downstairs. That woul be so much easier than relocating a 220v socket to my upstairs. Is it safe first of all? And what size wire should I get? I'll be using x6-8 600's on that circuit (30a). The problem I have is they only sell a 6' dryer cord at the store so I need to make my own that is 50' or so. Let me know your thoughts guys.

hey I am not a professional but 10 could but 8 gauge would be better. One thing is at 6-8 600's will get close to the 80% on that 30 amp.I would find other outlets for ac,fans and pumps. I ran 6 gauge to upgrade to 50 amp later.
there is people here that can confirm this info. searching is your friend.

Hey bro, thanks for the answer. I'll prob just go with some 6 just so I have that option to upgrade later on. Have a good day!!

Volt, Amp, Watt

VA=W

A=W/V

8 X 600W lamps = 4800 Watts

4800W/240V = 20 Amps

My reference chart titled, "table of wire size for 240 volts single-phase"

Amps Watts @ 240V #10-----#8
30------7200------------75 ft----120 ft

#10 looks to provide plenty of capacity.

You probably wont be able to run 120v from this power source. H

Dryer sockets contain three big power conductors.
Two of them are HOT and drive electrons between them at 240Volt.
The third terminal is ground or common.
The voltage between either one of the HOT terminals, and ground is 120Volt.
Draw things out on paper and it is easier to understand.

There are many kinds of plug configurations.
Take note of pin orientation and spacing and pin size and shape of the installation you wish to tap.
This will make finding an identical plug easier.

If your lamps require 120Volt you will need to balance the power pulled off each side of the circuit.
Power drawn at 240 Volts is by its nature automatically balanced.

Hope this helps.

You wont be able to run 120v dunge,
its hot hot ground, most likely. Thats how most dryer outlets are so you def. dont wana pull your missing neutral from bare ground wire. Most dryer runs are 2 wire not 3.
BUt he probably doesnt need a neutral if hes running all 240v.
Also i wouldnt get a male plug to insert in, i would install a 4s to one gang extension box and hardwire it.
