So the conjoining tube say 3 inch return line, that can reflect light from res and from inside tent back into the root area, do u suggest white or black, since half is inside and half is outside.

I was under the impression whatever logic is applied to an external res should be applied to an internal one. I mean with our without roots in them I guess matters. I guess ill concede and say my logic wouldnt apply to the external res IF the light wasnt reflected into the root res. I use single tote more than external res, i should have read more. I just was getting the impression it doesnt matter in either I guess and im sure others were too.

There is no PVC in the plant sites. Just between them. Light would need to take a 90* turn to get into the plant sites, if there even was any. Certainly not coming from the res...

Im dying bro, why you say its a fight instead of data exchange. I dont think anyone here who has being doing hydro for years is doing it wrong. Im saying that there are multiple of us doing it correctly in different ways.

I'm also constantly hearing that light getting thru the 3" PVC returns is a big issue too. It's just not.

There are a lot of misunderstandings out there.

This is where I had to jump in and say, if you flashlight test it, you will see it leaks light. White pvc can be painted black. Then no light gets in, regardless if its an issue or not, no one will be hurt if they use black pvc vs white. I would suggest that if the do they opposite, and run white that will increase their chances of light entering their res. SURE we can say if they have an elbow it it wont matter, or that even if gets in it doesnt matter. Yet none of that takes away from the fact that generally, we try to limit light from entering the res the roots sit in.

Because we are talking past each other. I don't see a data exchange, I see that you are convinced that white PVC is a problem, and I'm telling you it is not. I'm trying to show proof. No proof will be acceptable to you, so we are at an impasse.

On the other side, there is no way for you to convince me that painting my PVC black will improve those roots I posted. I believe it is a waste of time and energy. It also makes it a PITA to make changes to the system and get things glued without leaks.

Would you know if you are running a chiller?

Before I added my chillers, I was running the piston pumps. I still have them collecting dust. They get as hot as a pistol when you run them 24x7. Like too hot to touch. You would have a hard time convincing me that removing those from the system was not a temp benefit. But no, I have not done a bench test to determine how much heat energy is transferred to the res. I'm convinced they do, but I could be wrong, I just don't see it.

The diaphragm pumps create almost no heat, they do not even have cooling fins or any need for them.

I break all the rules. Room is 3x13, 2 chillers 2 air pumps 5 ballasts, ive seen 100+ deg in that area. My plants seem to thrive pumping warm air into 68 deg water using a single small rd air stone in each plant. And i throttle down the air.

Your the one acting like were married here. I just came to offer up ways for the op avoid issues in the future with algae problems. As long as he can read all this im sure he will do whatever he wants as we all do. Id say it was better for him to hear the criticism to eachothers claims. So far all he needs is an elbow to make it not a big deal. . gotcha

Im referring to pumping warm air into the root zone. Both styles take the air available and pump it. Often im pumping 100 deg air into the root zone.

Lets clear up some stuff… algae is not the cause of root rot. It is a sign of a healthy system exposed to light. White PVC is absolutely fine.

Its hard to explain things to those who may not have the understanding to get it.

algae on coco is also a good sign yet for some reason everyone feels the need to kill it.

Cyanobacteria can be an issue and is not algae but photosynthesizes like algae do. Looks like pea soup.

if you get algae its simply an indication you have a light leak.

If you see diatoms (often ppl call brown algae it’s usually seen in new systems from high silica levels in tap water and usually goes away on its own. Also no issue

root rot is for the most part pythium and its not caused by light, temps etc it is caused by improper use of a sterile or live system allowing it to take hold.

it doesn’t matter what you do the spores are everywhere so if you get an infection it’s usually due to plant health more than any other factors

Tap roots with fibrous roots with those fishbone type hairs and your water level is 1 inch below pot. Looks typical and what i always i wanted.

We have hashed this out already. I told you it was more difficult than expected yet I would have to do it all over again the exact same way. Within a week or so of doing that I was able to replace my drain in the shower. I went from 0 plumbing experience before that. Do I plan on building another system that way, no lol. . so again, your suggesting that because I tried to build my own bulkheads, no one should listen to me? Like i really dont want to reply yo your answer to that.
