I’ve been growing a while and had to learn the hard way. The real hard way lol. Over time I realized that I like to experiment. If someone says something for a fact then I do the opposite just to see what will happen. Most of the time when I do something odd I expect it to fail but it’s great to see what happens first hand. I’m curious about the day/night schedule now.

Cannabis flowers from 12 hours of dark and we go by a 24 hour schedule. What would happen if we made it a 30 hour day? It would be the same 18 hours of light and a 12 hour dark period. Could it unlock something weird that really hasn’t been seen before? Alaska has strain that flower and its days are all messed up. It use to be some of the strongest stuff around too.

I want some thought on it. I have a timer I could set once a week and make it happen lol.

I have no way of getting anything tested. From what I’ve seen it’s not a thing in Ohio.

Just some random thoughts.

flowering is triggered by the ratio of florigen hormone inside the plant.

when night exceed a certain time it's start release florigen hormone, then during the day it's start to decrease.

longer day will probably make the ratio of florigen decrease below the flowering point.

That seems legit. Just something I’ve never thought about. I seen there’s a thread about the same exact thing from a couple of years ago too.

HerbalEdu knows his stuff. Lucky for us he's willing to share.
But sometimes, it's okay to try it for yourself. 🙂

( not sure but that might even been worse causing some abnormal growth with the plant half flowering half revegging, with the ratio being high enough for flowering for part of the day then decreasing near the end of the day )

You're onto something interesting and your curiosity is the right mindset for discovery.

If you ran a 30-hour cycle with 18 hours light and 12 dark, cannabis would likely still flower, since the critical trigger is uninterrupted darkness, not a strict 24-hour cycle. However, plants have circadian rhythms tuned to 24 hours. Extending the "day" could cause hormonal confusion or stress, which might affect terpene or cannabinoid expression in unpredictable ways maybe even beneficial, maybe not.

Alaska strains and landraces evolved under extreme photoperiods, so it’s not unheard of for plants to adapt or express traits differently. You could discover something unique, especially with long-flowering sativas or wild hybrids.

If you do it—document it all. Even if you can’t lab test, your nose, eyes, effects, and structure observations are still valuable. And yes, the fact that testing isn’t easy in Ohio sucks, but personal experimentation is still legit data.

Set the timer. See what happens. You might be ahead of the curve.

I am the same way. I would like to do some testing in vdp and I will after I grow some weed😜
I want to run a test on VDP variance. How close to even is the data that tells you how effective you are transpiring the plants.
My grows have really taken off after I got my temp and humidity dialed in. I would like to run 3 plants and need to be clones from the same mother as genetic variances will screw the data. Set one up on a VDP that is as close as I can get it and use accepted guidelines for this setting. The next plant with a .30 variance on vdp and the final one at .60 variance. I will let the tent and airflow set the cycle.
Obviously I would need 3 separate tents but it is a long term plan.

Personally I think you would also have to add more darkness. Like @HerbalEdu said, the hormone levels are they key. The ratios between day and night are important here. I suspect you'd have to run something like 18/18 for it to work.

But I like the way you think! I've been running autos and vegging photos under 9/3 since I read about it on this forum 5 years ago!

Good luck and keep us posted!! 💚
