Yes, that's everywhere...that's why I always do a thorough wipe /wash down ( napkin down inside ridge ) on the whole top and bottom lip parts. Lol..that's like watching someone suck on a ketchup packet from say Micky Ds,or burger king..that's a big box with the lid just torn off..
Where rats there's usually roaches also....Nasty...

You see ? This is one reason I say all canning companies should take a page from Pelle Pell's book (San Pellegrino canned water). There's a vacuum foiled "lid" on their cans applied after the cans are already sterilized (during the canning process).....

For a second I thought the New York reference was the old "stirring the milk with the shaft" routine....

"What's that ma'am ? A cold glass of milk with your eggs.....suuuuuure - I'll have that right up for you"

Sorry fellow members - I just had to....now go and try to erase that from your memory....

Also, there are areas in this Country where farmers are using human waste to fertilize there fields before planting. Yes big commercial trucks dump or pump all that shit and piss and other bodily fluids and im sure there are fluids in there from people that have serious diseases. Im sure this wouldnt be allowed if un-safe. They dump it in fields and let it bake for a while and then scoop it up and spread it in their fields and till into the soil. Hey anyone want a bottle of POOP-Tastic?

It's not the diseases that would worry me, it's the medications. Disease-causing organisms may die off during decomposition, may not be able to pass through cell walls/membranes, may be eaten by other organisms, etc. They're a natural part of the cycle. Prescription medications, however, are another beast altogether. I could use the example of birth control pills, which are typically an artificially created hormone used at artificially high levels, thus causing problems like feminism in amphibians.

But natural effluent...? Doesn't bother me. What does bother me is using potable water to dispose of such effluent. It makes me ashamed.

You should look into "milorganite" just a little bit.

Edit: And yeah, it's organic!

@Seamaiden can you explain the benefits of using, uh, pee? This is the first I've heard of that. Or at least the first time I've heard of it from somebody who's opinion I actually trust haha.

@Minitiger I don't think there are benefits of pee as a fertilizer. But there are benefits to giving our waste a use instead of disposing it. Like: saving water, money, environments, and more.

But there are also drawbacks: like sea said, prescription medications...and that's really all the drawbacks anybody needs...

It's a complete fertilizer that actually outperforms synthetics, when used alone or with wood ash. Let me pull up the Iceland study.
This is the study w/abstract -- http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jf9018917
Here's a SciAm blog about the study: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/news-blog/p-is-for-plants-human-urine-plus-as-2009-09-04/
And, here's another one--seawater. Italian Seawater Study, which is part of why I now fairly religiously use sea salts (Sea-90 specifically) in my regimen. Plus, it's tasty, too!

Ever hear of Nemo's Garden in Italy? Growing underwater. NO pests, no disease! I check them out daily, but I can't understand what the divers are saying.

I was going to link you to the live stream, but now they've added advertising.

Urine is a complete fertilizer. We're happy to use the effluent of other (often so treated) animals, including chickens, cattle and bats, all animals that can pass diseases to us. So, what's the real functional difference? No functional difference, but plenty of cultural difference. If we're careful about how it's used, then we are fine.

Also, peeponics.

Ah, okay. I'll check those links out shortly. The prescription drugs thing kinda weirds me out. I have panic attacks, sometimes I won't have one for two years, then all of a sudden I'll have one every day for a month (which has been happening lately). Super-annoying. No idea why they happen, because there's zero stress in my life, but whenI have them, I have to take Xanax or klonopin, whichever I have on hand, so I'll probably skip using my own pee. I hate taking those pills, but it's the only thing that works. Not even a heavy Indica helps.

Thanks for the info, though. I'll read up on that soon. Learn something new every day here haha.

Man, that Nemo's garden thing is fucking bad-ass! I'm reluctant to use the word "genius" when describing, well, pretty much anything, but that dude is definitely on to something, particularly when you consider that most of the world's gonna be underwater relatively soon. I watched a bunch of those videos, but I still can't figure out how they're keeping the submerged "greenhouses" from filling up with water. In any event, if anybody who's active on this thread hasn't seen those links that @Seamaiden included a couple posts up, check them out. Very fascinating.

The GH's being used simply prevent water from coming in, that's it. The air is held in naturally from that point on, think: diving bell. Every time the divers enter, they push some air out, but conversely they bring some in via their air tanks & respiration. Being a scuba diver, I kinda really fucking dig this whole thing. I do get seasick underwater, but we've got Transderm, baby!

Hello farmers!

I am just a noob giving living soil a try, and have a few questions. I started out planning to go with FFOF and organic bottled nutes, but soon realized I need to ditch the bottles altogether as they aren't truly organic and would like to KISS (thank you thcfarmer). I would love to mix up some super soil for the next round but not ready to do so yet. I have my plants in 50/50 FFOF and Canna Coco, and was going to feed them with GO nutes as recommended by the hydro store guy. Another reason I would like to go with a super soil is to stop listening to the hydro store guy and buying stuff I don't need haha. I have a bunch of leftover things from some other projects and samples from the store along with some donated things, lots of options. I am hoping to be able to get away with topdressing and using compost tea with the current medium I have now and not use nutrients if at all possible.

For more info, I started seedlings in HF and transplanted into the OF/Coco mix a week ago and have given zero nutrients, just RO water and a weekly tea of OG Biowar Root and Foliar, EWC, and Earth Syrup as microbe food. I also top dressed with EWC the last time I gave them tea. They are doing quite well so far, no issues. Some things I am hoping to top dress and or water with:

Megaworm EWC
Roots Organics Elemental - for Cal and Mg?
Water Soluble Kelp - 1-1-17
Bat Guano 0-7-0
Seabird Guano 0-8-1
Roots Organics Uprising dry ferts- grow, bloom, foundation.
Insect Frass 2-2-2
Humisolve humic acid
Green Gro Nature's Pride veg and Bloom
CalCarb (foliar)
SN14 - high N

I know I don't need all of these, just a list of the things I have available. Most of them were free so I would like to utilize them. I know bat guano and possibly seabird guano are a touchy subject and would not buy them myself, they were given to me. Forgot to mention I dusted the transplant holes with Mykos and Azos, the roots are going nuts! I have heard that bugs don't like the insect frass, was hoping to utilize that. I also could't really find much info on the Green Gro stuff so unsure what it is.

Any advice would be great!

You should absolutely try inoculating your growing media with ¼ tsp./gal.!!!I personally believe it to be better than bio-char or anything else comparable to do what bio-char is good for...
