Tried your aperature setting yesterday on a Sony DSC F707.Didn't see any difference from using the auto mode with the macro setting on.
Will keep that info for further tries though.
Tripod is a good idea too as it's hard to stay steady bending or kneeling over a plant to get a good close up.

with open-as-much aperature you will get a clearer image as more light
goes in as the shutter opens and close. (less chance of blurry images)
the more the aperture expands you will get an effect called depth-of-field (DOF)
that means that the object you have focused on them will come out clear and sharp
and as the distance increase the other objects come out blurry
it comes out nice in macro-photography, make sure you get the camera as close
as possible (as long as it can focus on the object) try about 12 inches
