So, doing some reading last night and this AM. My problem is that Big Kai and Little Kai are about 2 weeks apart in lifecycle, I only have one tent and I must conceal the smell. So everything must be done in the tent.

I’ve read light degrades thc and drying should be done in the dark.

my plan is to use paper grocery bags to put Big Kais buds into and hang them from the top of my tent. RH will be in the 40s and the bag will at least keep the buds in the dark.

maybe I’ll try hanging Little Kai as I’ll be done with the grow at that point.

Hey man, I just want to chime in to say that the level of detail you are putting into your tracking and analysis has been really great and inspirational from someone planning his first garden. Look forward to seeing your harvest!

Thanks! Looking back at my posts, it’s a lot of info. And it’s not very organized at all. Not being able to edit posts is rough!

My next grow posts will be more focused....I hope!

Ok folks. I’m questioning if drying my buds in my tent is truly the right idea. Especially since I have 2+ weeks to go in my second plant. Everything I’ve read says temps need to be in the 60s, not in the 70s like my tent. also the humidity should be 50ish, not 35-40 in my tent. Also, air flow in my tent will still be pretty fast, which is a third negative to drying too quickly.

So for the hell of it i found a few cardboard boxes and taped them together. It’s about 26”x28”x36”.

What are your thoughts on the below approach? I was thinking of buying a humidity controller to turn the fan on/off for 45-55 RH, and leave it at that.

the area in my basement has a stable temp of 61F and 45RH. I’ve had a sensor there for the past few days. So I figure as long as I can capture the smell, keep the temp stable and control the humidity, I should be golden.

Definitely planning to harvest big Kai this weekend. I believe she’s ready! Got a few amber trichomes showing on all buds, at least all that are along the main canopy.

I have cut many of the fan leaves off in prep for harvest.

Here are some pics!

I can’t wait to taste! One thing that i haven’t said yet is that it’s been about 8 years since I’ve smoked since I’ve been in a job that did random screens due to security clearances. So, it’ll be nice to partake again!

Started to put Big Kai into the dark. My option was putting a cardboard box over her! Planning to harvest tomorrow or Sunday.

In the midst of trimming Big Kai. Question about sugar leaves....are they even the small ones that are like 1/2” long? And if so, do you take them off from the stem? Or just shave off the leaf part sticking out of the bud?

Cuz if it’s at the stem, this is gonna take a while....and ima destroy my buds lol.

Left is bud, middle is larf, right is skeleton

Like these...they are the sugar leaves, right?

Remove entirely? Or is getting most of the leave that protrudes from the bud ok?

Yes sugar leaves and just trim close , nice job . Let dry in a cool dark place for 5-6 days until stems snap then jar it up.

You are going to want to dry in the dark... photosynthesis can still occur in chopped plants... lots of chlorophyll... no bueno... I have found that dark, room temp, and slight air movement is best.. few days till they snap then into jars.... first couple of days I leave the top unscrewed and watch the humidity doesnt start climbing again... (mold also no bueno ) I target 60%

I would suggest these...

Pardon Our Interruption...

and these most def over the integra boost 55 RH

Got it. I probably cut off a bit too much early on. I was trying to trim out every little leaf. But many of them were nestled into the bud.

Now I know! :P I watched several YouTube videos that would have helped to watch last week too......

I have these. They seem to be all relatively accurate. So at least that’s working. Can’t tell how precise they are tho.

I have my drying box in a room with pretty constant temp/humidity with a dehumidifier set to 50% if it does climb.

Bit of an update. My drying box worked great. Was able to maintain 55RH and 68F the whole week. I put Big Kai’s buds into jars today and it’s holding at 59RH at 68F over the past 3 hours. Probably could have put them in jars a day earlier.

Little Kai is still humming along in flower. Still has a ways to go!

Ok. So one odd thing going on with Little Kai....they were both supposedly the same strain. I used the same soil mix, same nutrient dosage, same Epsom salt etc. literally everything the same.

however, Little Kai is a significantly different color than Big Kai. Don’t mind the limp leaves. This was right before watering and I had run her pretty dry.

Is a pheno just a different version of a certain strain? Unstable genetics?

I suppose I’ll find out, as I have 7 more seeds of it and I plan to use the last 2 to do the colloidal silver to get pollen and then pollinate the other.

That's my understanding. Maybe it just wasn't stabilized quite enough and you got something more rare. Like you said, you'll find out.
