First Medical Marijuana Raid by DEA under Obama Administration

Advocates call on president Obama to quickly change harmful, outdated policy

Oakland, CA -- The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) raided a medical marijuana dispensary today in South Lake Tahoe, California, in the first days of the new Obama Administration. Even though President Barack Obama had made repeated promises during his election campaign to end federal raids in medical marijuana states, many high-ranking Bush Administration officials have yet to leave office. For example, still at the helm of the DEA is acting Administrator Michele Leonhart, who has been responsible for numerous federal raids in California, following in the footsteps of her predecessor Karen Tandy. Neither Eric Holder, President Obama's pick for U.S. Attorney General, nor a new DEA Administrator, have taken office yet.

"Whether or not this unconscionable raid on a medical marijuana provider is the fault of federal officials from the previous administration, President Obama has an opportunity to change this harmful and outdated policy," said Caren Woodson, Director of Government Affairs for Americans for Safe Access (ASA). "We are hopeful that these are the last remnants of the Bush regime and that President Obama will quickly develop a more compassionate policy toward our most vulnerable citizens."

Medical marijuana and an unknown amount of cash was seized during the raid today from Holistic Solutions, but no arrests were made. This first DEA raid under the new Obama Administration is another example of more than 100 raids on medical marijuana providers that have occurred in California over the past two years. While the greatest federal enforcement has occurred in California, the DEA has been active in other states as well. Federal agents raided the Washington State offices of a medical marijuana advocacy group that was supplying starter plants to hundreds of authorized patients. In Oregon, a federal grand jury was used by the DEA to obtain the medical records of several patients, an effort that was later rejected by a federal court. The DEA also went as far as to threaten New Mexico officials for planning to implement that states medical marijuana distribution program.

"I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users," Senator Obama said in an August 2007 statement. "It's not a good use of our resources," he continued. This statement was followed up by Obama in other public events in the run up to the election. "President Obama must rise to the occasion by quickly correcting this problem and by keeping the promise he made to the voters of this country," said Woodson. ASA has been working with the new Administration on changing federal law around medical marijuana, which has included providing a comprehensive set of policy recommendations.

oh dear, lets just hope its a left over from the bush admin, things cant change like flicking a swtich, laws are involved and must be adhered to,give the man a chance!
I didnt go for all the hype,in fact i only watched highlights of the inaugoration, but was very impressed.i got no love for bush, but he didnt speak for the people, and peeps are peeps the world over, dont think anyone had a problem with americans,it was just that fucking admin acting like the british did in india, seems we never learn as humans and we all shoulder the guilt equally, things do need to imrpove and this fella Obama stands more chance than most.

Watching that there was a feeling of real promise, inspirational change within grasp, but it will take time cos beaurocrats and there daft ways wont dissapear overnight,in fact they are part of the maschinations of government, but at least now there might be some clarity and sense to the proceedings.

Whatever Obama is or isnt, try comparing him to gordon brown, what a joke he is,at least i respect and listen to the american president, which is more than i would do for my primeminister.

give the fella a chance, and if he doesnt follow through, then annilihate him come next election, not much else u can do.

so he promises something, then doesnt deliver, would that really make him so different to every other fool in politics, the job that they pretend to do for others, but u wont see em volunteering anywhere, unless theres cameras n babies to kiss present.

really do hope things change, cos it wont just affect america,a postive leadership will beneift the world.

Obama is about as much 'the real deal' as my ass shits money.

I agree entirely, however, that the raid can not be placed on his administration, given that she just started like 3 days ago.

Gordon Brown>Obama

atleast with Brown everyone knows hes a sack of shit, facade over 'change' is starting to piss me off with all the rhetorical bullshit.

That being said, my advise is always to forget bout general election, Tories, labour, snp, matters not, as you said they all money hungry muppets. Local constituencies is where you get the biggest impact.

Obama wants to focus on human rights? He had plenty of time in his first days to sign an executive order to close gitmo. How about seeing to people being able to use the medicine of their choice without fear of incarceration, fines or losing their homes and or business. I don't care what happens to those that wish to do nothing but cause those of us in the US harm. Take care of and help the sick already.

Its your time Obama, show us the change.

The stimulus package is more of the same at the end of the day unfortunately. I don't believe that any one man has the "power" to change the course.

Way I see it guys is the Medical Marijuana community played a very large role in getting Obama nominated as president. He has basicially made promises to end federal raids on medical marijuana patients and dispenseries. Now is the time to follow through with those statements or promises, however u call it he needs to act and act immediatly as far as I am concerned!! Sticking to ones word is the most impoirtant thing a person can do especially one voted into a position of power such as president Obama's. This has to stop now...as that Tahoe raid was bull.....Mucho Mota KGB
