Greetings all! Hope you are having a great day.
So I have got my first ever BHO extraction in the vac chamber now and, well, it didn't go swimmingly. I mean, I didn't blow myself up, so that's nice, but the product I got out was very dark and green/brown, and is waxing in the vac chamber.
I was hoping you wizards here could advise. There are a few probabilities, so I'll list them here and eventually get a final product photo on to see if it accounts for the result.
I have a closed column extractor from BHO Hardware. Unfortunately, don't have the adapter I need to pull a vacuum on the extractor, but that is on the way.
So, I was using a frozen ounce of sugar leaf off my dealer. No doubt it is far from fresh. There is one variable.
I left the extractor parts and butane can in the freezer overnight, probably about 20 hours. Got it all out, put it together, packed the column, and set the pyrex in a warm water bath. I pushed in my PTFE mat that came with the vacuum chamber in to the pyrex making a bit of a square boat.
I started pushing butane with the bottom valve closed until the pressure equalised, then I slowly opened the bottom valve until I got a stable steam. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear the volume of the extract was too much for the folded mat, and the mat was also keeping the extractor out of contact with the warm pyrex. So I closed off the column (top and bottom), faffed around with the mat to pour the extract in to the pyrex direct, and then continued blasting until clear. I feel that might be a second issue, as I'm not using an ice sleeve or anything and the butane has a chance to just sit with the material.
I had a semi-recently boiled kettle to hand to top up little bits of water as it cooled as well, which might be another issue (too hot of a purge). I started at about 30c (a little less than 90f), measured with a digital thermometer, but can't say how hot it may have got as I added more water.
I'll get some photos once I've purged, but I'm hoping that just those three main things are more than enough to account for a less than desirable extract.
EDIT: Should also add, I only used the included 30 micron filter, thinking it would be enough. Should I also be cutting a coffee filter and putting that on top?
Any thoughts?
