well going from my studies you will notice they wont be in so much of a hurry to be pushing upwards more out to the sides with the leaves ect ive never heard it mentioned here as of yet but from what i understand its at about the age of 3-4 weeks from first breaking ground if im right, a great list of people to look at on here are loompa and seraphim but to name a few they have some amazing and very informative posts on the whole cycle which is better for you to read and gain a bit of insight in over just my posts its who ive learned alot from in the past year also a great post about breeding and such just depends what you are wanting to try

I'll be relocating at some point in the not so distant future, at that point I'll probably get out of this box entirely and set up a tent with a 600w HPs or a pair of 315w CMH. If I were to stay in this box, I would go with a cheap 150w HPS from econolight and rewire it to remote ballast. For about $40 and an hour's worth of work can have a solid micro sized hps remote ballast. And those little things can put out! They're not something to turn the other cheek to, when done right in a small space, 150w HPS can put some serious product out.

A ballast works like a stereo amplifier. It takes in E (voltage) at I (amperage) and puts out P (watts). So when you see someone say 1000w HPS or whatever, you know they're running a light that puts out X watts to the light bulb. These large lights need that power level to run properly. Even CFLs have a ballast, that's what the fat part at the base of the bulb is. All it does is pulls so many amps to be able to efficiently power the light. That's a bit more in depth than you were asking, but it's good to understand electrical theory in what we do. The equation is this:

(E) volts x (I) amps
---------------------------
(P) watts

That's Watt's Law. You can divide E by P and find I as well as multiply E by I to figure out P. This will let you know you're not going to over power your circuit breakers and pull your place down. It's also helpful in calculating cost of running and what not.

HPS is High Pressure Sodium. They are a gas filled bulb with a piece of Sodium inside the filament. When powered appropriately, this piece of sodium puts off a very specific color spectrum of light at very intense levels. Metal Halide are also gas filled and I don't recall much more about them. They function on a similar property though. You want to learn how to read spectrum charts and make informed purchases as not all fixtures and bulbs are created the same.

So you don't really need a ballast but it's better to have one basically? And can you use a hps or mh light threw the whole grow or just certain cylce? Interesting I may have to invest in a 150w hps sounds interesting and it's also the best lighting choice everyone says.

I wanna look into the wiring the hps with the ballast. Sounds fun I'm always down for a project and it's a better lighting option I'm all for it. @tobh I'm gonna hate off your style lmao :D

Finished my first notmterribly long ago real similar to yours. My advice is learn to clone cause you're gonna be hooked and won't wanna wait on beans!

I've actually taken a liking to auto flowers they don't take long I'm ordering some tonight from herbies then gonna plant them once I get. And clone one of those bad boys. But that's the future lol @lemons

they have a very short window to take m. this not from my exp, but from reading here at the farm.

You have to have a ballast or it wont work, you choose the ballast that fits your bulb or vice-versa or buy a led light.

@tattoojim so your saying you have a short window to make clones? And @3N1GM4 so I'd have to get a ballast for a 150w hps in order for it to work you can't just plug into wall? Not sure how to wire shit. I'll have to look for a thread.

@tattoojim OG you should already know I'm on top of that! Lol like Everytime someone says something or gives me some advice I always look it up right after I like have sources I can pick and choose from and compare info and pick which one I think is the best or the most helpful etc. Lol I'm just happy I'm getting some official shit instead of finding a bag seed every once in a while and germinating it. Rather know for sure what I got and know how it grows based on other people's experiences. I got much respect for all ya! Thanks peeps!

So I went to the grow shop today to pick up some light bulbs and the guy gave me a packet of this stuff. Can any one tell me what this is for exactly? And thank you ahead of time and updates on anyone's plants they wanna share? Anything?
