so I'm all rough framed up on new hoophouse. Wouldn't mind running it at winter time. I have some thoughts an don't have anyone to run them by here. The misses could care less. So... I plan on taking 4 feet of soil inside hoophouse, that will give me about 14 feet from top to bottom. I will line walls below ground with mason blocks. I then plan to run corregated 4 inch from middle of my compost pile, under ground 5 foot an have it come out at bottom of hoophouse underground. Place 4 inch suction inline fan to draw heat from compost pile an underground heat enough to keep alive. Almost walipini like. Any info, ideas will be welcome, thanks

I know at your geographical location the sun sits rather low in the sky during winter. Immersing it in the ground cuts that angle even shorter. They are ideally suited for areas close to the equator when you are looking to obtain natural light. However if you were to artificially illuminate the plants, a walipini would help with temperature regularity. :D Heating with compost is really cool!

Your northernmost side would get some when the plants were taller but the rest would suffer.
If you have a south facing hillside you could do a partial walipini with the North wall completely earth bermed, you would have the two short sides that were partially underground, and the roof and front (south facing) long wall would be completely translucent for light. Thus giving you somewhat better temperature control than a regular greenhouse but plenty of light.
:D

Sorry, I didn't mean to shoot you down... I've researched that one before, and being not too far south from you I learned it won't work for us. Not without modification anyway. :) You've got skills, I know you could rig one up easy. :D

LOL, you could make it to any size you wanted. Heavy equipment could make the process much more enjoyable though. :)
