Flow requirements?

How much flow is really neccessary and why? It seems that a low/slow flow would be just as beneficial.

I don't know one way or the other why more flow would be better or worse... I DO know that as far as the solution getting to the end point it's going to get to (pH, EC) I like more flow better. Can you imagine waiting two hours to take readings after making inputs?

4-5 times total volume turn over. My system is 160 gallons and I run a mag12. probably could be larger but thats what it was..
