I like to wait until the fan leaves start dying and there are some amber trichomes before I start the flush.

So keep using the nutrients until I notice the discoloration in the leaves?

Some strains dont show colors but most do. If you think its close check the cloudy to amber trichome ratio. I wouldnt start the final flush until I had at least around 20%amber trichomes.

It all depends on how you like you finished bud...more up/racey or more stoney/couchy?
The more amber, more stoney/couchy. THC is at its peak when tric's are translucent. cloudy they have stopped, Amber they are degrading.
With Sativas you want about a 30% amber and Indicas to finish about 20% amber.
But it differs from strain to strain on over all THC strength, CBD, terpines, ripeness.
It's all about what your preference is. You will have to do different harvest times with same strain, to learn what the difference is.
When I flush it's a 2 week before harvest, I want the plant to use up as much left over nutrients as possible.
It needs to ripen up, use its resources up.
