Allowing the atypical meristem to grow without topping will result in the Christmas tree shape usually seen in untopped auto flower plants. Like Aquaman said, topping and training encourages the plant to grow into a table top shape. Thus making the most out of indoor lights that come from directly above and don’t move.

I'm for LST training after I top once at the main apex I found topping or tipping as we call it can slow up the plant a bit but that's just my observations over the many many many years I've been growing . Od

Lots of things come into the equation when deciding to tip the plant and usually these are the reasons..height retricted indoors, for stealth outdoors, for a stronger bushier plant,to promote lateral growth and what others touched on..im same as One Drop, topping and training together can produce some bountiful crops done correctly.

As stated, not necessary at all, especially outdoors. Its just a way of optimizing the canopy for even light distribution, and it also makes the crop more consistent in terms of bud sizes.

I'm actually contemplating growing my current cycle out without topping just to see what they do unmolested, since it's a phenohunt from seeds. Curious to see what the terminal bud looks like on each, and how dominant the natural side branching is. Some strains honestly dont need topping because the side branches grow up tall anyway, but some strains have a very tall main stem making topping more beneficial.

That is the route I am going to take. Unless I have to due to height restrictions.

Check out the plant on the left, its taller than the house
