Teflon is fine. Check for leaks with sprayer and soapy water. Check all the line and connections.Better be safe than sorry when playin wiht gas.

Peace

either, but I'd use dope. It seals up better in my experience.

is pipe dope/teflon even necessary with a brass compression fitting?

yes
dope is technically preferred as teflon has been known to have tape particle down line clogging orifices but realistically either will work as the pressure at this stage is typically 11 inch of water or about 1/2 of a psi
always use a mediator between the fittings when plumbing gas
