trying to be sure
Gnat identification needed

Not a fungus gnat. Their abdomen is much smaller and they have longer antennae. I can agree with TG, might be an adult root aphid aka flyer. I would do a root drench out of caution, u don't want to wait until its too late

Not all insects are bad. Insects are a natural part of the eco system. That being said if you want to kill just about anything in the root zone you can bubble up 1 cup of neem cake in 5 gallons of water for 36-48 hours. Soil drench it 3 times in a row 3-4 days apart, and nothing will live. Then apply once per week from there.

First, I stickied this thread for a reason: https://www.thcfarmer.com/community...ungus-gnats-and-other-fun-bugs-id-pics.55071/

Second, it sure looks like the fungus gnats I have. It's been a WHILE since I've had to dick around with root aphids, but IIRC their wings lay differently. A fungus gnat's wings lay flat, one on top of the other over their back, whereas a root aphid's wings come together facing each other, like praying hands. So I think it's a fungus gnat. But, I could be wrong.

laying wings vs praying hands.got it.I figured out the source is from my worm bed and introduced through tea. i cand see the white wiggling little bastards in the soil.dumped a shitload of nematodes on them see how they like that. dumped some on top of my lava rock also not sure itll take very well tere though.i have 4 sticky cards out on the plants where i wa seeing them and theres only 3-4 caught ill try to get more pics up

yup seamaiden there fungus gnats wings as you described.crap never had gnats b4 gonna goback and read sticky to figure out best way to handle

Sorry but that doesn't look like either. It looks like some kind of fly.

ill get another pic up. hope your right.they def like hanging around my plants.thanks for input cap ill have a pic up within the hr

the antenna seem shorter than that of the fungus gnat..but what do i know thats why i asked.
hit them with nematodes and ogbiowar hopefully itll help if there harmfull

Ok, they still look more like fungus gnats to me, but like I said, I could be wrong. Here's a comparison on a yellow sticky card of a shorefly and a fungus gnat, maybe that'll be helpful.

Oh... hey! I can't really tell by your pix, do your bugs have the white spots noted here?

Yeah the antennae look too short. different legs too.

I think I agree with you, Capulator.

The thing is, and I'm chuckling as I sit here reading this stuff, the IPM, controls and management practices are precisely the same for shoreflies and fungus gnats. How often does that happen? I mean, how often is it that you don't have to go out and buy something *else* to deal with the thing you thought you were able to deal with, or hadn't thought of?

the good shore flies dont eat plants
the bad shore flies are know to carry fungus.booowahahaha
im just working on making there life uncomfortable until they go through there life cycle hoping to end them without pestisides.
iveonly caught about ten so far so its not real bad.
