Greenhouse hydro grow first attempt

Not sure you ever mentioned what you are using for a res. I did see it and the nice fountain you installed but..🥴 It is over 12 barrels x30-?? gallons = 360-?? gallons .. 🤔

It fills from the res to the point it overflows back to the res. When the pump kicks off it drains back to the res through the pump leaving the barrel empty with a small reserve at the bottom.

It’s 12/68 gallon sites. But I’m only filling them to roughly 60 gallons or so. My res is about 900 gallons and is nothing more than a 6x6 hole in the ground lines with 2” foam board insulation and two layers of 6mil greenhouse plastic to make it hold water..

Look into EPDM/ rubber made for roofs [ and ponds] for the long haul.
Comes in 10X and 20X sheets and 3 thicknesses [ .45 , .60 , .90]

The greenhouse film is definitely just a temporary solution. Definitely gonna go with something more durable in the future. The rubber roofing is the way to go for sure!

So while we are playing you mentioned you just changed the res.
What water parameters did you go with ?[ tap[ please give parameters] or R.O.] You would have to have a much larger res to use R.O. Which makes me think you maybe adjust pH ?
On the adjusting line for nutes do you EC or add weight by volume .
I will do a water based grow in the future, but have not been convinced that all who follow the 'standard water parameters rule' really know much about water.

I’m using well water, which is a little rusty to boot. Straight from the tap my water is about 8ph, and 300ppm of whatever(iron/calcium?) I have used R/O in the past but it’s not feasible for me with such a large reservoir. I’m running at an ec of 2.0 currently, 1400ppm give or take. I monitor res, and runoff ph and ec daily. The res all the time, and the runoff once a day after the first feed

Nice !
Smoke all the water knowledge here.
That is all it worth.
You know you can't grow 'hydro' over 6.5 ......
Every 'hydro' grower here I have read from will talk about pH.
Here is the long and short of pH.
IT IS THE MOST WORTHLESS PARAMETER OF WATER THERE IS .
What is important can be achieved without the 'dramatic' pH changes so many believe in.
THANKS> Knowledge is power..

I believe that there is a sweet spot for ph just like anything else but there are too many variables at play to carve it in stone. After some initial ph down due to my source water alkalinity it stays right at 5.9-6.1. And I don’t generally mess with it.

So are you running autos or how do you get them to flower? Is this a once a year deal? You consider sealing it up and climate controlling it for running 365? Ive never grown outdoors obviously, but i got all the shit to build a small hydro greenhouse and space to do it. I just wont do something unless im confident i wont fuck it up. My goal was to do what your doing, just prolly not so deep, and id run my water through a wort coil so I can raise my temps or lower them via pump pid. I just dont see the point in doing all this for one grow ya know? I mean even that amount of work you put in is alot for only 1 grow. I mean if autos are started early, i guess you could get 2 grows in if you transplanted the second one. Idk. . can you enlighten me cause atm i might just do a verticle tower off the back of the house and seal it up and add it too the home ac lol. . Sounds like some expensive food. The costs ill save on lights, ill spend on ac right? All is dumb unless you teach me

100% agree you dont need a drift. It can be beneficial but the real solution is adjusting your nutrient ratio to fit the ph. Its quite complex but if the plant’s are not showing deficiencies there is no need or benefit to forcing a drift.

But i dont feel its quite useless more just quite exaggerated as needed.

At this point it is a once a year grow, I have had the grand ideas of running all year, but haven’t thought real seriously about it yet. The greenhouse has provided abundant enough harvests that I still have flower from 2020.. so realistically for me running all year is not necessary.

So im only going to do it for non weed stuff. Honestly id like to start a small hydro farm business. Just wondering if the free light year round will be worth it. I own a 100x33ftx30tall stone building lol. . so I can do it all inside. I just like Hids and I dont see a 5x5 bed producing more than 150$ in crops per month. It will cost me that much just to operate it ya know. Plus idk what spectrum's are needed. Hell theres an aero setup for potatos im dying to try. But yea. . one harvest from yours should get you good for a while lol. .

Im with the other guy too, that chain link roof is gonna be your final scrog and you dont even know it.
