Mississippi for Cannabis has filed a petition with the state to begin collecting signatures to legalize, tax and regulate cannabis in The Magnolia State.

If approved, The group will collect signatures through 2015 with hopes of getting the measure on the November 2016 ballot.

Clarion-Ledger."The Mississippi Legislature also has the option to adopt our ballot initiative, but that is unlikely."

If the group gets approval, they would need to collect about 110,000 signatures over the next year.

According to Jacobs, the proposal would give adults the right to grow up to nine plants at home. They can't sell any of it, but they can give it away or use it to barter. Farms of ten plants or more would be taxed and licensed, with products going for sale in licensed dispensaries. Sale or distribution to minors would not be tolerated.

"We want to legalize marijuana and decriminalize it," Jacobs said. "It's an adult discussion we should be having."
