This is the room I am working with.

The black is dead area I can not use (full shelves) and same with the gray area.
the vertical brown lines are the diff heights (the roof is angled) so the max height is 8'3'' ad lowest on the sides is 6'6''. The green lines re windows. each square equals half a foot. Everything will be panda covered.

After some unexpected things my budget is lower than my initial allowance. I was thinking of doing a UC or RDWC and have pretty much settled on the UC. I like the lower plant count (even though this is a full legal med grow ) but I wont be able to afford the chiller. I have a friend how has a broken back, and cant wait the extra few months, So I was thinking of a SoG right now in a diy ebb and flow. I am going to make the flood tables out of either a few concrete mixing tubs or a hard plastic kiddy pool. Was thinking of using 6'' rock wool cubes stacked right next to each other and flowering either after 1 week veg or clone to flower . I am using 2 1000 hps for flowering, and either a 600 mh or 1000 mh for veg.

Im so torn on how to set the room up, I could use some input since this layout will effect the future when i switch to UC. I would like to set up the UC in the section next to the gray since it was the highest point and I would most likely need all the night i can get. But the area next to the right side is larger footprint wise. The buckets im using in th UC are the heavyduty black 27 gal's with yellow lids. I still have not figured if I should use 4 or 6 because im still torn on the lay out. planned on doing maybe a 4 site UC with 2 vert 600MH on each outer side and a 1000 HPS horizontal down the middle on a light mover.

What strains would be optimal for a short, if any, veg cycle?
What are the best "tree strains for the UC?

Any input and ideas would be awesome.

Thanks much in advance and sorry if I have asked questions that have already been asked. I have spent a while with the search engine on this site but its hard since you cant search for anything with less then 4 characters (SoG, UC, DWC)

*edit* Now that I look at it those 27gal is too big. I wont be able to contain the height of the plants. I really didnt want to have to order those expensive 13 gal buckets. Only reason I wanted to go with the 27gal was because they were the thickest, lightproof and the most durable ones readily available.

easi dustee, i dont know anything about UC but have done a few SOG grows, put 75 per light in a 1.5x1.5m space and you shud be sweet, any more than that it will be overcrowded imo, veg for 5 days and they shud end up around a ft tall, what strains can you get hold of? ive got a white bubba that can be chopped at 60 days and she produces fat dense nugs, not the biggest of yielder unless dialled in proper but she packs a punch
hope all works out for ya bro

I have found various seeds, but not much locally. I dont know any one that grows, and im pretty secluded.

i have notices that a lot of the white widow strains and the AK strains come up a lot. big bus was another, but I dont care for the potency. And The Ultimate kinda caught my eye.

no probs bro, them strains that your interested in shud be cool for a SOG too

That ceiling height could/might be a real limiting factor for you in terms of being able to grow large plants, especially if you're using reflectors.

Take away 2'+ for the reflector (and at least the 12" distance from plant tops), and then another 1'+ for the buckets.........doesn't leave you much distance for plant height.

As far as SOG goes, if using anything more than 1 light and doing a "proper" SOG, you're not going to be within your medical limits - that being said, 4/sf (in 6" blocks) is a kickass way to grow, IMO.

I don't see the point in taking the time/expense to setup an RDWC grow and not investing in a chiller - pretty much an exercise in futility, IMO.

For your first grow, some nice 5-10 gallon pots using dirt/coco or some other forgiving medium is really a better idea to ensure you at least get some meds out of the grow - experienced growers have lost whole crops to RDWC (using chillers and other safeguards) - if there's someone counting on these meds, I'd make sure you at least harvest something.

Good luck.

I feel Bobbys advice about the coco or dirt would be your first best chance on success. UC is a whole new ballpark for the grower without any material, and skillz in that area. Your much safer with the first mentioned and do some research if uc is gona be right for you.
