I normally grow in soil but I want to try coco coir I was wondering if the bricks are ok I really don't want to buy the expensive begged stuff because I need about 160 gallons of it and don't want to spend a fortune

I’ve used the bricks but went to using pre processed bags of coco and perlite because for the price you only save a few bucks and have to buffer it yourself and spend time unbricking it lol

Huge time difference in prep. The coco guys fix lots of grows around here that never heard of a 4 4 4 soak wetting agents and cal mag.

I'm new to coco myself. But I've learned how to hydrate it for cannabis and mycology. Cannabis
you want the high end, a little wetter; several drops when squeezed; mycology on dryer side barely 1 or 2 drops when squeezed.
I'm only using small amounts so far and have yet to learn how to rinse and buffer it. (I use gypsum for myco) 👊✌️

On average, high-quality dry coco coir absorbs 6× its weight in water at field capacity.

Water (g)=Dry Coco (g)×6\text{Water (g)} = \text{Dry Coco (g)} \times 6Water (g)=Dry Coco (g)×6
Since 1 mL ≈ 1 g of water, that also gives milliliters.

🧮 Calculation ​

Example for 623g dry brick:
623g×6=3738g≈3.74Lofwater623 g \times 6 = 3738 g ≈ 3.74 L of water623g×6=3738g≈3.74Lofwater

⚙️ Fine-Tuning Range​

  • Low end (5.5×) → 3.43 L (if you add perlite or want lighter mix)
  • High end (6.5×) → 4.05 L (if you want maximum moisture retention)

✅ Quick Reference Formula​

Water (L)=Coco (g)×0.006\boxed{\text{Water (L)} = \text{Coco (g)} \times 0.006}Water (L)=Coco (g)×0.006
Example: 623 g × 0.006 = 3.74 L


💧 Application​

  1. Heat 3.7 L of 160–180 °F (70–82 °C) water with your Ca/Mg buffer or gypsum.
  2. Pour ~90 % first, wait 10 min, then fluff and add the rest slowly until the squeeze test (1–2 drops).
  3. Final moisture for cannabis = 68–72 % by weight.

Bricks are just compressed coco coir. Yes, use them😉 I pay about $20 for 51 qts. Ive seen it for $15 on sale. I use a shitload and have bought about 8 or 9 in the last year as I've switched from gardening in the ground to everything in pots of coco. I currently have 2 brand new and one just fluffed and ready to use.

I also reuse what I can. Need to be careful as tomatoes and cucumbers usually end up with PM and mosaic and they will pass on through the substrate.

I can safely say I've used just about every type of coco coir out there, from the chunky coco husk croutons to brick, including the coco coir you can get at pet smart for your lizard's bedding (I was in a hurry and the store was there, the coco was there, and I was there and the price was surprisingly good. And it was pre-washed). And have good results with all, but I will state for the record I will never use the coco husk crouton material ever again. At least not straight by itself. I personally had a never ending run of problems with it that all went away when I switched to the brick and fiber coir.

I don't grow on the scale your talking, so what I'm using is usually bush doctor or fox farm 70/30. I only do 2-3 plants at a time anymore, it's all I can handle. And I don't use big pots except for mothers, and even then the biggest is only 1 gal.

If I was going on the scale you're talking, I'd be looking at this stuff. Pre-washed, pre-buffered, just hydrate and go. Understand, you ask 10 different people what they'd use, you'll get 10 different answers probably. And all of them would do the job most likely.

I've been using the ac infinity. So far so good. I'm on my second grow. The first was soil.

I bought a bag of Mother Earth All Purpose Coco which is like 70% Coco 30% perlite, and it’s ready from the bag. My plants have been happy with it. You can buy a brick and clean and mix with your own perlite, but the bags work fine, too.

I just harvested. It's looking good. Smoked some of the early larf and I'm happy so far. I'll let you know how the final harvest tastes in a few weeks.

I've been thinking about this post as I've been growing in coco 6+ years now and have gotten lazy. I use to wash and condition all new coco - this one

Honestly not a big deal but that's got to effect growth speed so I'm changing up a bit. I'm still not willing to rinse the coco as you lose some of the coco peat but soaking in 3/4 strength Master Blend and adding the bacteria should be the bomb.

I'm enjoying my harvest. I got about 6 ounces from the 2 plants - total. Taste is ok. It's improving. The dry went a little fast when my humidifier died, but it's working out. Getting better as I cure it.

What did you water with Tap water or R/o? Did you cal mag every water?

I'm getting ready to start a grow in mother earth. How did the grow finish for you? Any pointers for me. Calmag needed? I'm in week 4 of my first grow and it's been a struggle.
