I guess its about time I get started on my grow diary..
- HeyO! Thanks for stopping in.. I've started the journey of an indoor grow, and I'm about a month and a half in. I don't have a whole lot of experience, but I can learn more and more as I go.
I'm not growing anything special, but they're all special to me. ;) Along with my three, 3 gallon planters, I have 4 starter cups and an experimental, non aerated hanging root- Onion. (About a week old!.. Well, chopped and planted..its an old onion)
With each plant, I'm trying different techniques.. Ones been topped, ones been FIMed, and ones been left free until a few days ago, I topped and gave it a hard bend.. She's still perky;).
My starters seem to be progressing slow, but maybe its just me looking at them every day. Two are 3 nodes in, the two are a week or so younger at 2 nodes(after the starter leaves..)..
My grow area is of decent size, 3½×5½×8ft tall.. So I can go up no problem, which is somewhat the plan..
Again, I'm no pro, and I'm still figuring it out as I go.
To keep things (somewhat) organized, I'm going to post each plant as its own comment/thread here... But to start off, here's the Gang;)
Thanks for stopping in, I'll be updating every couple days or so..

The Topper:
Probably my favorite of the three main. I just like the way it looks...sturdy, bendy, happy.. I'm wondering if I should give it's tops a topping too, and get four way going? (Anyone experienced in that, feel free to leave me some advice on that, it would be much appreciated.).

15824326615991692063477

(notice the staggered nodes..🤔 is this normal? The other side is the same..)

1582432997439 1726346228
(the 'other' side)

All in all, I'm happy with its progress so far.. Its not as tall as the others, but that's understandable, its been topped.. But I feel this is going to be better yielder with the split top.
Being that the nodes are staggering, I'm wondering if I should avoid a second top...again, any advice is appreciated.

-Current troubles:
•Fungal Gnats.. Nothing fun about them.. And I suspect these "gi's* have something to do with it..

IMG 20200221 224812

Good thing its only in this planter, but the gnats..😰. If you have a natural remedy, I'm all ears.. It seems almost every 3 days, a group pops up.. Is it my potting mix, or just the room condition.. Both?.. I don't fear the mushrooms, I understand that it means good medium, but again.. The gnats.
Theyve had a thorough watering 1½weeks ago, I think I'll lightly water them tomorrow, top two inches are loosely moist.. .
End rant~

Legs:
She's got em'.. Like her other sister(before the great bend).. She's getting tall..
1582434458294 582846899

I wanted to let this one be free, although the odd heights might become problematic.. (Which is why I worked the other, taller twin over)
She's been trimmed a couple times giving her odd node spacing, but the cut leaves just weren't progressing, so I fired them.. The plant hasn't skipped a beat without em'..
15824348528211252293443

(Notice the skipped node..)

I rather like the thinner fingers of this one.. Her sister has a broader set, but they both run about the same length..
1582435007134 105698795

Problems:
I feel like princess Peach in the toadstool kingdom, because this one has em'.. Better than the big shrooms, but still, gnat food :( again, I don't mind them, I like mushrooms and their vast varieties.. But them gnats!

BigBertha:
She was the tallest of the three, about 2-3 inches taller than legs.. About the same in every aspect, leggy but happy, trimmed a little bit..
1582435825431 495126124

(Big B and mini-me)

But I decide to go drastic on this one.. I topped it 3 days ago, and gave it a good bending.
1582435946793 1142533962

1582436023302 1697373029

(I cut one of the down runners..)

I topped this one when I bent it.. I plan to work them tops over as well. She has broader leaves than legs.. The top splits are coming in, and the lower nodes are developing with the added light from the bend.
1582436321813 1217410328

Problems:
- none really.. The medium doesn't shroom over, maybe standalone toadstool, but overall, fine..
Same as the siblings, light water tomorrow.

This thing is great! I swear, you can watch it grow!! Its put on a couple centimeters every day! Its my hydro experiment, so far so good.. Running off of General Hydroponics at recommend dose.

Fingers crossed I think j I just ended my bout with em by removing the top layer of media and trashing it, the a dusting of diox and I have only seen like 1-2 since still have my sticky traps up though

Good idea! Makes sense too, that's where they live.. I'll give that a try before I go pesticidal..

Mosquito Bits are approved for organic farming. Bti produces toxins which are effective in killing various species of mosquitoes, fungus gnats, and blackflies, while having almost no effect on other organisms.

Update: its been a minute! To those still interested, I thank you for your patience~...

I had to pull out one of the three as it started showing signs of being a male;(
I removed the smaller plants out doors to a semi shady area, and they're doing well. I stopped the toadstool problem, and have reduced the gnats, but they're still lingering some.. The main two left are coming in nicely, although I know it can be better-
• I need to quit procrastinating and mylar/foil my walls, although I'm fixing to install another light..
• I need to transplant to 5-7gal buckets, any advice is welcomed.
• I need to better control my humidity- its often too dry-

With that said, the plants are looking good to me, and as beginner indoor grow with scrap bag seeds, I'm happy ;).

Ive defeated the fungi gnats with sticky traps, worked better than expected..however, I now have little white gnats(thrips?) They look like gnat sized moths.. They're not as bad as the gnats were, but I'm afraid they're leaving droppings on my leaves.. I'm currently looking into foliage spray- any recommendations?

Sounds like whiteflies? search it and if you have them come back and let us know cuz you're going to need to get after them asap. I had don't have experience with them but I think I know someone who may

So I'm not sure if they're whiteflies, there's only a few, and they're not as bad what I've came across. I'll keep looking into, but for now, here's a pic of one I was able to find- (bad phone cam). You can see the droppings on the leaves.(piece of dirt on one leaf)

That's white flies; I don't have experience with them, I would ask @Seraphine and @Dirtbag

Recommend you read up on them asap, I've heard they're very hard to eradicate, not sure if that's what's making those white spots on your plant or if that's another pest, possibly thrips? Hope this helps, good luck

Hard to tell, can you take a better close up pic of the leaf with the damage? Kinda looks like thrips trails. But could be whitefly. If whitefly something like azamax or neem, or an insecticidal soap like safers end all or Scott's bug b gone should work. If thrips, a spinosad product is your best bet.

-some of the leaf damage...
-I spotted some nestings under the larger fan leaves of the "non problematic" plant.. (They're living on the tall one, and feeding on the short one?!?).
Will diluted H202(hydrogenperoxcide) work for short term control, until I can get a proper spray?..

Not really. Youd be better off using rosemary oil and garlic oil in a spray bottle of water until you can get something higher caliber. There are good recipes on the Internet for rosemary oil sprays if you google it. It works somewhat well against spider mites.

Also, that looks more like spider mite damage. And that last pic of the bottom of the leaf, looks like a spider mite. Sorry Hoopty... Looks like your hooped.

Lol couldnt resist.

You will need an acaricide.
