Has anyone ever tried a soil/hydro type of grow before? Wasn't intended to go this way, but it did.

not sure thats the best idea man. There is no reason you would want your soil to sit in a reservoir of water. You are begging for trouble.

Right, like I said wasn't planning on this, but also wasn't planning on snow in May here on the east coast. So I took my finger and worked all the soil I could free down about 2.5" and dumped it out and replaced with hydrotin. The roots are just really finding their way through the inch or 2 of clay pebbles and into the reservoir bubbles. I'm hoping they don't wick up so much excess water they saturate the soil left in pot. So far so good. I'm hoping to be able to move these guys outside soon but if not may just see what it does. Never ran my own hydro before.

but why keep them in the res at all? just leave them in the pots till you are ready to bring outside? You need to let that soil dry out brother.

The pots themselves are set up 1.5" or so off the bottom of the net pots with hydrotin. The roots are the only thing actually sitting in water. They are really starting to take off now. The soil is not saturated whatsoever, I just hope that rings true in over the next few weeks of necessary.

It's really not that big of a deal. More of an unexpected experiment. I have my regular organic soil pots going and more seeds in rapid rooters. I was going to put these outside but after talking with the local hydro shop owner decided to let them run.
