Farmers,

First off, thanks for all the great info. But I have found it's easy for a guy with only one solo grow to get overwhelmed. So, to put simply, if you had a house, a little money to spend, and free reign to to deck out 2 rooms or 1 room and a garage....what would you do?

I want to do a big grow, but I would love to hear your thoughts because soon I will have all those things listed above.

Rooms have more insulation than garages. So it would be easier to cool rooms in house. Unless you want to spend time and money insulating the garage well including the door.

But if you spill mad water in yhour garage its no big deal. Insolution is super cheap. 1-2 sheets of that styrofoam foil backed works well.. At a certain size, the insulation in the room matters little. You are creating so much heat, the little extra is or little consideration. You want to be sealed tho and you will need to build a wall in front of the garage door.

If you wanna play with the big boys its going to take some work. You can still get it all done, but you need to be more cerebral about it than an op where they can throw money or people at it. Not the case in a 1 man op..

I do much less that what I can legally do but it comes to a point where you are trying to balance risk with amount of labor with costs..

Size of the room's? What kind of system do you want to run? Closed with CO2 or vented?

I was a bit overwhelmed at first, then I just sat down and made some decisions. I think they were educated and well thought out decisions.

Thats another reason I love the mpb's so much, low numbers, your highest count is in Mother's, at least for me, I keep 25 strains on tap, its like anything else, Every once in awhile you gotta switch it up, Garages are 20 x 20 normally, you could put a 12 x 12 in there and a 7 x 7 and a 4 x 4, all portable rooms. 1 flower, 1 veg and 1 for males or cloning.
Run a dual mini split, one unit in veg another in Flower, Put the male/Clone box on passive. Usually the electric panel is by the garage, Grab a 50 amp for the flower room and a 30 amp for the veg. Get a real chiller and put the mini split condenser outside. Throw a portable AC or Swamp cooler in the garage to get rid of any heat you can. At the end of the day you have a complete perpetual Single man operation that could be justified as a personal medical garden.

Exactly. Go 60 amp on the flower panel. GoD basically described my set up to a T. Except I happen to have a 3 car in a small ass house (Dunno why they do that in Cali but it worked out, hahahah)

Get a trimmer as you know. You don't have to go MPB but it does return in the shortest period of time. The UC's are godly as well. They are in fact 100 times easier than building MPB's. Unless your a serious hobbiest, UC will be easier.

wow, thanks guys. If I did UC's, I hear it's easier and almost the same price to just buy the system vs DIY? Also, when I said big I was thinking like 4k flower to start. Veg and clone rooms would be based on feeding that need. Perpetual is ideal, or at least no veg time if I keep a dedicated veg room. Also, what about soil? From my experience it a lot slower with longer veg times, but apparently more forgiving?

Great thread. I've always wondered how I would set up once I finally get a good spot and how much power would be required to pull it off. This is just the kind of thing I was looking for. What do you estimate the buildout cost would be (range)?

first question might be: how much have you got to spend?

Portables are sooo inefficient. A 3 inch hole in the right place is no big deal. If you swap out the portables vs mini splits, you will see a few hundred dollar difference in your costs. If your going big, i have to reccommend the mini splits. I have tried a few things, and the mini split is the best so far :)

I'm planning on UC systems/sealed room. I would start with one smaller system then you can easily add on after you got it going on so you aren't overwhelmed. The exceptions being power supply and HVAC. I would go a little overkill in design and get that done before you do anything else after you've designed your system (with room for grow room growth). The guys selling undercurrent system http://cch2o.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=31 would be very helpful in planning on top of the cool guys and gals here at the farm. http://www.nowirenuts.ca/ Can give you some ideas of the electrical wizardry that can happen. Jackmayoffer, JK, Texas Kid and Lost all have great threads here showing their moving water systems. Now go get it done so I can see the bud porn!

Personally, If this is your first grow, I would reccommend rolling coco in a drain to waste setup. It produces and vegatates faster than soil but not as fast as rdwc. The thing is rdwc is something you really have to monitor and stay on top of. coco is as forgiving (if not more) than soil and you get better yields without all the headaches of rdwc. Also the equipment will cost you less (no chillers, less pumps) and if you have a power outage you dont loose your crop. Also you can leave coco for a few days(or weeks depending on your lvl of automation) and not be pulling your hair out wondering if your crop is dead. I would say set up a coco/perlite run vertically like the UC and once you get your enviromental controlls and plant spacing dialed in then switch to a UC system or MPBs. That way you will at least be able to pay back the investment with your first crop because you will get frusterated if you spend $30,000 and your crop fails. Just my .02. ALso Dizzle has a good thread on coco vert style (called Dizzle is booty clapping for ya ass or something similar). Goodluck and happy farming!

surprised i havent read this yet. But my question is with only one grow i think you might be a little overwhelmed if you try something like your talking about without a little more experience. Its big money to set up the right rooms, and without much knowledge and time under your belt to get that money back you'll be in the negative for awhile.
