Today we put some plants in the GH

My wifes Cactus

The male in back has been in there a while now..he is fine
Not growing though

The female in front has been out there going on 3 days..and I take it in the garage in the evening for 4 hours more light.
She is not very happy really...

I think im gonna wait a bit for the other plants..Maybe 1 or two more each week,,I dunno
we will see tonight what the low gets to in there

Meanwhile, the Mother room is 68 with the lights on and 60 right before they come on.
and they dont seem to mind much..

Yep those are cactus from seed :)

Awesome ken! I myself cant wait to get some outdoor going. Just closed on a house with a huge lot and a preexisting small orchard.

Please keep this updated for all and the inspiration.

I knew a guy who had some interesting methods for keeping his greenhouse warm in winter. One of them was something along the lines of having copper rods in a bed of sand inside the greenhouse and heating the rods with either fire or sun, so that the sand became a heat sink. Apparently once heated, it would give off heat for most of the night. Never saw it in action.

I saw a video of a fellow up in BC, Vancouver (? I'm suddenly questioning my knowledge of geography!) who uses the tiny Christmas tree lights strung around his greenhouse and they keep it quite warm. Dude had a CROTON in there when it was below freezing!

Oh, and Ken....?

I was at Homo' Depot and looked at some Pella 6 foot by 6 foot double paned sliding glass doors complete with screens for 350 bucks each. Put two of those mommas together on the long south side and off to the races. I think buying those would be cheaper and more efficient than buying that Solexx overpriced stuff. OTOH, you can get older sliding glass doors on Craigs List for cheap. I may build a second GH, with all double paned glass.

Yeah Man efficiency is the way to go. Duel pane kicks ass

Keeping the heat inside my GH is what im trying to figure out.
The coverings I used do Nothing to insulate..and I if I try to heat it, there will be tons of waste :(

I think I might have an idea though :)

yeah man....Thats what I was thinking too...:)
Gonna do the inside walls and Make a 8ft Ceiling out of some 4 ml or maybe even 2ml plastic.
The roof is really clear so, I dont think another 4ml of plastic will block to0 much light.o_O
and the North wall could get another layer of 6ml
just till it warms up.. :)

There's someone out here who's got a GH rather like that. It's pretty cool-looking.

Here is an update on the plants in the GH ;)

No Heat...no sup lights..
the male got bit by the cold....gonna be in shock awhile..loose leaves for sure

the female is holding up ok

I am just gonna let the female go into flower.
..I might have to cover her with a trashcan when I get the lights up
I chose that plant to be 1st out there, because I forgot to label it...
.its all good though :) Im thinking Rock candy or ewok
Im sure I will know when she flowers

Hey Who ever is reading this,

Do you think I need to shade plants I bring into the gh for couple days?

I mean to harden them....Is two layers of 4ml enough to shade them?

or how about cloudy days?...

thanks
