Hi All. i have turned a large fridge into a grow room. it everything i have read up on - external fan with carbon filter, inlet fan, internal fans, humidifier on a sensor, heater on a sensor, light on a timer. all set up for what i have read. heat during lights on set between 24 to 26, heat during lights off set between 18 to 20. humidity for seedling growth set between 67% to 72%. lights on 18/6 cycle. i have tried 2 lights at different heights with different intensities. i made a few mistakes with my first 3 attempts.

FIRST attempt the outside temperatures were too hot and i had trouble balancing the inside temp and over heated the seedling stunting it, it stayed like a 1 week old seedling. ( i made the necessary changers to the grow environment)

SECOND attempt i over watered it and the soil was to heavy. it stayed like a 1 week old seedling ( i made the necessary changers)

THIRD attempt i started light nutrients at the end if week 2 and burnt the leaver. it was still small when i did that but with time managed to get it to grow more it is now about 60mm tall and 60mm wide but has stopped growing again. it is in week 7 now.

FOURTH attempt I discovered the light i was using had veg and bloom settings i halved the total umol of both switches since i only had the veg switch on. but found out it was still giving 600umol. so thought excess light could also be an issue (i got a new with adjustable dial) this time i used an app and set it up so the seedling would get 300umol. after 3 weeks the seedling only looks like a 1 week old

FIFTH attempt on line i have seen 100 to 300 umol for seedlings and i have also read 5000lux for the first week then increse it by 5000lux each week so i thought the 300 umol did not work so i would try that. so i set up the light to give 5200lux = 90umol, on day 1 the seedling was 25mm tall on day 3 it was 40mm tall and on day 4 it was 60mm tall. as it was stretching i have now turned the light up to give it about 8000lux = about 130umol that is today

i still have attempt 3 4 and 5 growing 3 and 4 just are not doing anything they are getting 9000lux and 10000lux

I am growing in a 20% top soil - 30% propagation sand - 50% coco coir mix

any help would be appreciated.
Could it be an issue with the top soil? it is a new bag of top soil from Mitre 10
would just growing in coco coir and propagation sand be better.

This is my first time on any blog and first time growing
Thank you all for your time

Pictures tell a thousand words friend chuck a pic up of ya babies n u will be sorted out a lot quicker👍

Thank you for your reply. i taken some photos. the 7 week old as far as i could tell never looked overwatered (i now know what that looks like i think) it suffered nutrient burn at 2 1/2 weeks old but was very small at that age. then i got it to recover after just over a week and it grew again for about a week and then just stopped again and has been like this for almost 2 weeks.

the 3 week old was looking good until yesterday. the top 15mm of the soil was dry and it had been 5 days between watering the last water was plain water PH6.5, so even though it was small it was almost 3 weeks old so i watered it with a nutrient mix giving it approximately NPK 4:1:1.5. and now for the first time it is looking over watered to me. this seedling i was letting it dry out a lot between watering as to not overwater it

The 5 day old seedling i really want to grow so i am reaching out to see what is wrong. the only thing left i can think of is maybe there is a problem with the 20% soil

I am letting the soil dry out the top 15mm or more and letting it get below 55% on the soil meters before watering. i am using PH6.4 to PH 6.6 plain water for the first 2 to 3 weeks

each plant has 1 photo taken under the grow light and 1 taken under a torch flood light. the mist you might see is the humidifier mist
the 7 week old was watered late yesterday. the 3 week old just over 1 day ago. the 5 day old has not been watered since the seed was planted after germination. but it has been sprayed 3 times each day that has been keeping the soil moist

Any and all help would be appreciated as i only have 2 seeds left now

Get some real soil! You’ve created “frankensoil”, coco and sand, which is 70% of your media are devoid of nutrients. Get some Fox Fatms, Coast of Maine, Black Gold, or something similar, made for cannabis. Watering every day or even every other day is too much. You’re drowning the roots, they need O2 also. When the roots are overly wet, they can’t process nutrients and it grows very slowly!

Welcome to the Farm!

I agree with @Phyto. Also, it would help to know the nutrient line you are using

Hi all,
Im only watering about every 5th day looking at my grow diary.

as for the light i started with an older bestva 600. that produced a lot of heat in my small grow space and was causing issues. i now have a new version Mars Hydro TS1000 hung at 400mm at 20% power giving 8000lux and about 130umol to the seedling. my 4th attempt was getting 300umol and still did not grow. so i started this grow with a lower light setting.

With the soil a lot of what i read was this sort of mix. i started with a more soil base mix but it retained way too much water so i added the course propagation sand and that helped with the drainage, but still held too much as added the coco coir.

where i live there is no dedicated cannabis soil. i have garden shops, miter 10 and bunnings. I am in new zealand

googling the soils you mention this comes up

Terra Professional 50 Litre Canna

Didn’t realize your location. I have heard of people using Bunnings. If you can’t get cannabis specific soil, almost any good quality potting soil will work. My caveat would be avoid soils that have time release nutes (miracle grow types). Best of luck!

Hi Phyto, what are your thoughts on the terra professional 50l canna I found from the grow shop
I think,Phyto would say, that will do just fine! Sounds close enough to happy frog for me! It’s kind of hard to find a list of it ingredients! But it doesn’t sound overly pre-fertilized! But it might be one of those hybrids with Coco mixed in that I wouldn’t be thrilled about! But it’s better than what you’re using!

Hi Oldchucky & Phytw
Thanks for your thoughts. i just got a bag and carefully transplanted the 3 week old seedling, it had a very very small root system for being 3 weeks old. i watered it around the outside edge of the pot. and turned the light up slightly. this one is now getting about 200umol - 14000lux

I also transplanted the 5 day old, its root system was bigger than the 3 week old. i also watered it about 60mm out from the seedling and sprayed it. it is now getting about 180umol - 12000lux. as this one was a little stretched i planted it with only half the stem out of the soil

How long do you think they should take to recover and start growing again?

Thanks @Oldchucky, You called it right. The Canna terra professional is a peat based soil. I’ve never used it, but others have had good results with it. It’ll take a week or so and you should start seeing increased growth.

This is exactly why new growers should NEVER start with autos!!

I have no idea why they’re marketed like a “beginner friendly” alternative to photos….

Stick with photos because you can mess them up and still give them time to heal!!!

Hi OldSchoolest. thanks for your input. i will read up more on Photos. like you say everything was pointing me as a beginner to the autos.

Looking forward to seeing what happens now after transplanting. just have to let them do their thing and recover for a week or so.

Try pro mix #4 mixed with coco if you have it near you . Don’t use top soil it too easy to mess up in my opinion if you doing coco.

I think pro mix 100% is good too, comparing and I notice it’s less mushy after watering so I think it’s more airy

Get a cheap ph liquid kit and a ppm meter it’s like 30$ . If have money get high end ones but really overkill for pro mix I think unless you are color blind

Trust me you will thank me . I had same issue and I switched to pro mix and now it’s easy and grows better then soil .

Ph it to 6.0 and nutes every time . Flush once a month .

Hey, we all start somewhere — no shame in being new! Best advice I can give is to keep things simple at first: start with good genetics from a trusted source, focus on your environment (light, temp, humidity), and don’t overdo the nutrients. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions — the learning curve can be steep, but the community’s here to help. You got this! 🌱💪

Skip the auto strains for now lately i keep seeing posts with new growers and one bud 5week old plants full in flower.
And dont be afraid to lst the shit out of them
