Is There Any Efficient Way To Make A Diy Smart Pot?

Is there any efficient way to make a DIY smart pot that wont require much hardware? I was thinking use drip so as to not over saturate since from what I've read about soil attracting pathogens, this problem will arise left often when soil is kept well aerated.
