There's a little more control when you use salt fertilizers and soil, but once you start to "dial in" with organic, there is a little less work involved.
It seems like when people move to inorganic nutes, they often go with a non-soil medium, like coco. The thing about soil is that added nutrients are stored to some extent, and may not be completely available to the plant when you add it. Coco and other "soilless" media don't have the ability to store much, so you have much more control over what is called the "soil solution" (the composition of the moisture that is in the soil or other media is the soil solution).
