Kinston police, along with a Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office deputy, were on patrol in the area of Simon Bright apartments around 9:50 p.m. Saturday when they encountered a suspicious person in the 300 block of South McDaniels Street.

“While speaking with (Charles Dewayne) Dunn, (the officer) observed he was chewing on a clear plastic baggie that contained something green,” KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said. “When he asked Mr. Dunn what he had in his mouth, he did not respond — he appeared to be trying to swallow the baggie. Believing it was marijuana, officers ordered Mr. Dunn to spit it out, and Mr. Dunn did not comply and continued trying to swallow the contraband. He was taken down to try to keep him from swallowing it.”

The officer used a Taser on Dunn’s body rather than shoot him with the Taser gun, whereupon Dunn spit out a plastic bag containing four smaller bags containing a substance believed to be marijuana.

Dunn, 35, was arrested and charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, misdemeanor resisting a public officer and placed into the W.E. “Billy” Smith Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.

Dunn’s first appearance in Lenoir County District Court was scheduled for Monday.
