Hey guys,

Beginning grower here. I planted her beginning of spring. She looks great overall but a couple of the largest fan leaves are getting yellow like this. I've tried to figure it out on my own but I'm not sure. Maybe nitrogen? Would it be common to only show on big lower fan leaves like this? Thanks

Very normal at this stage. Look at the overall condition of the plant. Looks healthy, good color. Your plant will shut down leaves that are older and or no longer productive, and recycle the nutrients inside it.
Same thing will happen to most of the fans as flowering progresses

By the way, you may want to start thinning out the inside of your plant where it’s not getting light. You also need good airflow into your plants so they can uptake CO2 properly. Air needs to flow across the laminar surface of the leaves so that the plant can respire properly.

Thanks RR1!

Should I trim those yellow fan leaves off now or wait?

I've been wondering about thinning it out a little. Should I just trim leaves that aren't getting any sun? Is it OK to trim entire branches that aren't getting much sun as long as I don't trim too much at any given time? Any other guidelines in terms of knowing what and what not to trim? Thanks, really appreciate it

In veg I just pinch off leaves like that. I also regularly thin out the inside growth that’s not getting light anyway. I like good airflow, (crucial), and it makes no sense to have little solar panels where there is no light.
Never trim more than about 15% of the plant mass at a time.
In flower I also take all the small flower sites underneath as well, with the last pruning at 4 weeks into flower. The plant will put more energy into your best buds, increasing the size of them.
The top third of your plant gets the most light, and the best buds. Let your plant concentrate it’s energy there.
Once you get comfy growing, think about scrog type grows. First learn how to grow. Take notes every day. Stay simple for now and concentrate on healthy girls. This isn’t magic, just pay attention to details.
Remember, all nute lines can work well once you learn the basics. Money spent on Jorge Cervantes books is never wasted.
Good luck, and have fun.

Great Information... But Might I Add Along With Everything Stated,

Has Anyone Tried Bending Your Plants Slowly But Surely And Or Lollipop Them ?
And Not Only From The Bottom. RR1 Points Out The Need For Light To Penetrate The Canopy
Of Your Plants... Which I Agree With Everything He Said Above. Personally, I Bend My Plants Over
And Also In A Circular Fashion With 4-5 Main Branches So All The Buds/Colas Get As Much Light As Possible.
Now Be Careful... You Can Overdo It-Am I Correct RR1 ? You Rock RR1/Keep Up Your Good Work.
Peace And Thank You, Brother Will

Thanks for the props. I use super cropping on occasion when I get an unexpected monster.
The trick is to pinch stem gently, then slowly bend. If it partially breaks I use masking tape to fix. The break will form a knuckle that is stiff and strong.
Been reading these forums for awhile, and too many newbs seem to want lbs right away. It’s a process. Learn basics well, take good notes to refer back to when problems come up, and learn to grow healthy plants.
You kids are lucky, 35 years ago good info and genetics were hard to come by.
Problem now is too much info, and it can get confusing.
Pick a lane and drive for awhile. Pick a solid nute program and learn to run it in your sleep. Try new things one at a time and keep notes.
And don’t get discouraged, you’re not a real grower until you’ve killed a few(I’ve probably killed over a hundred)
Relax and have fun.

{That's Exactly What I Do. Some Growers Get It Right Off The Bat And Others Have To Learn While Doing. But So Correct RR1 Nothing Like Any Good Tape Will Do The Trick ! Never Give Up.}

Man RR1... I Couldn't Have Stated That Better-Right On ! All About The Basics Amen !

Exactly So Right On The Money With Everything You Said ! Us Older Pharts Had To Learn The Hard Way.
These Days Are So Much More Simple... But You're Also So Right RR1 About How Confusing It Can Be.
Far Too Many Choices-Like You Said Above: Pick A Solid Nute Program And Learn To Run It In Your Sleep. Try New Things One At A Time And Keep Notes. And Don't Get Discouraged. Words Of Wisdom From Many Trials And Errors. Relax And Have Fun... Gosh Just The Best Info ! I So Agree 'Experiment', 'Take Notes' And Above All Learn... But Relax And Have Fun. Thanks Again Very Much. RR1 You Rock !

Just Beautiful MadBud And Yeah Not All At Once/Give Some Time To Heal-Great Advice. If I May, Here's Basically What You're After... I Don't Feed My Plants That Much And I Flush Very Well. I Know The White Ash Theory{Like White Ash From A Joint Or Within A Bowl} Isn't Very Scientific, But I Swear By It And That's What I/We Strive For. You Want All Those Leaves That Are Packed With Stored Up Nutrients To Give Back To The Plant Overall. But Especially For The Floral Hormones Which Make The Large Buds And Colas. Have A Look Below @ This Big Bud Strain...

Oh my God, look at all those yellow leaves!?
Seriously, looks awesome. Like your philosophy about not feeding too much. So many folks get hung up on jamming the nutes to our girls that I think they miss the point.
Use good, solid genetics, a well balanced nute program, and a nice benign environment. With solid genetics a healthy plant can produce to it’s potential.
I get good soil results from making my own soils, takes 6 months.
By using a well made organic soil I find heavy flushing not necessary. Just stop extra feeding for last 10-12 days, just balanced water.
My hydro is different. But still good results. I don’t pound them with nutes either, and get great smell and taste. Not to mention hellacious yields.

Thanks Will, I’m starting to blush.
No really, I try to be concise and to the point, although I do go on sometimes.
Too many years working with water chemistry, writing technical papers and reports it kinda gets to be a habit. I do like to teach,(some might say showing off) but its mostly just to pass on what has taken so long to learn.
Wait till I get going on organic, and what that word really means. The board will light up. LOL
Hope you are well, have a blessed day.
