2017 Cotton Information
12. COTTON DEFOLIATION
Keith Edmisten
Guy Collins
Crop Science Extension Specialists—Cotton
Defoliation is the application of chemicals to encourage or force cotton leaves to drop from the
plant in order to harvest the crop in a timely manner. Defoliation is a balancing act between
killing the leaves and not affecting the leaf. For successful defoliation, the leaf must stay alive
long enough to begin the formation of an abscission zone that results in leaf drop. If the leaf
is killed too rapidly, the chemical signals are not sent from the leaf to the abscission zone. The
result is a leaf that is frozen or “stuck” to the plant, creating unnecessary trash.
Proper defoliation is a profitable part of a total cotton management system. Benefits include:
1.Elimination of the main source of stain and trash, resulting in better grades.
2.Faster and more efficient picker operation.
3.Quicker drying of dew, allowing picking to begin earlier in the day.
4.Straightening of lodged plants for more efficient picking.
5.Retardation of boll rot.
6.Potential stimulation of boll opening, which can increase earliness, yield, and profit.

I love how you always throw up scientific paper that never really support your point

defol for cotton is mainly used for harvest practices
as described above

there are many crops that get defoled in production
hydro tomatoes
Hydro Peppers
Hydro Eggplant

but see I live near and visit one of the largest Hydro greenhouses in the world
so I usually have no Idea what I am talking about

they DONT use a 3 part hydro solution
(CalNit, Phosphates/Micronutes, Acid *ph)
They DONT use coco coir slabs
They DONT defol plants

I have no idea what I am talking about
I am completely lost
hey.....guys??????? where is that scientific paper????? guys???? I am lost
please help
I am sinking into the abyss that is the internet

If I write a scientific paper on it, would that suffice?

Correct. And it was said in this thread if you do strip you have to increase carbs and sugars to make up for it. You just cannot do it 1 time and expect results you got to do it several times at certian points.

What is being missed is its done on large plants. Scrog flattens plants so there not in natural form, even scrog in vert.

Plants your going for weight with you dont want a hybrid with a indaca leaf you want the sativa side.

The reasoning is to stop shading the calyx and pound it with usuable spectrum. The small leaves that are in the cola will produce whats needed, you dont need fans and its back to pounding that cola

This pertains more to lollipopping which by scientific findings would be beneficial. Those suckers she referred to suck sugar as it travels up to the main flowers.

actually it dosnt suck sugar
it sucks nutrients to create new biomass
and when you are *single stemming*
you want to snap any growth off that is not of a single stem
but they run more than a single stem per plant
but they single them out and snap suckers on each single stem

And here lies a very important point!
Look how all the branches are the same height and I never topped, just clipped certain fans, at certain times!
Very effective,
Even tho I know thats a lil farther from what we are discussing
as a full defol

Hydro tomatoes if you want scientific info look over in holland and those areas the rely on hydroponics to grow thier food lettuce, tomatoes ect.

What it comes down to is the number of grows you have done. The people that know are like me where everytime I flower I have a cpl test subjects I mutilate, stress, break and over/u der feed to see if I can find something, if I do it goes in place on 6 plants, then the room.

I have zero feelings fora plant. They are mearly all test subjects in the end to a better method and practice

Canna practices are pieces robbed from many areas of big agricultute.

Yet to find a female that didnt like the gummer treatment human or plant or anything inbetween:drunk:

For real mother nature is a cruel bitch.

Take your human feeling push them aside. It seems plants are very responsive to rough treatment for a short period. It makes them stronger. Thats how you find what a plant can do.

You get weak then the bugs take over and end your existance. Mothering a plant keeping it "natural" is human feelings becoming part of the program.

Theres no place for human feelings in the plant world.

I got ya, I got ya anytime. Dont worry about that mic hitting the floor yet, all I have done is reach for it. I may have to drop it like its hot and I have no qualms about it.

Gotta keep that pimp hand firm yet loving.

P.s. pencil my guess as 1.5lbs on that screen come pay day, it may not hit that number but its going to be close short or over

That's not why I grow how I do. We aren't all tree huggers. It's how I was taught at a young age and it's all I know. I'd be lost in hydro. I have heard of Holland using hydro for crops. My work hours are all over the place. I cant plan a feeding schedule. All i do is watch them grow. Makes sense?

You know why I don't train. By the time I use a month to train I could have another cycle ready to flower. Over time with my setup I would yield more per calendar year.

If I defoliated in organic growing my plants would gas out before they produce the maximum yield. If you look at my latest journal you can see the leaves fading off. Tops turning purple while the bottoms turn yellow. I have to rely on stored sugar. My plants stop nutrient uptake during ripening.

We have to use scientific studies to confirm information given on the internet. Have you seen the shit people say? I'm only skeptical because some info is gained at the hydro shop. The guy at the hydro store told me I couldn't make soil with half the nutrient values of fox farms yet I dug up forest humus from my back yard and made a bowl of dirt.

Maybe it's why defoliation can work for hydro. You can target feed. I just provide the same feed schedule from start to finish. A balanced feed. That's because my plants will only take what they need as long as everything is balanced. Once my plant stops stretching my plant never grows another fan leaf of any decent size. Almost like sugar leaves.

Btw...i I know people hate on me. I've seen whitepistols posts about his huge issues with how I grow and somehow I'm not growing organically. I'm using the soil food web to feed my plants. "Organic" has become a loose term due to USFDA standards and OMRI listed doesn't mean anything. It means they're on the list to become certified.

You also know im open to info. I was actually interested to read about organic/synthetic growing after whitepistols pointed It out to me. It makes sense to me. Honestly I like to debate to learn. I've learned more in a good debate than reading through boring.papers. I like the interaction where all views are expressed.

If you have questions about my methods just ask. I'll be more than happy to explain.

Why do I grow my plants short? My thinking is the quicker I can put a plant through the less likely issues will arise. I could veg my plant for another month and a half but why would I if I can have a whole other cycle 1/4 through flower.

Truth being my methods are based around laziness. I also try to avoid tail chasing scenerios. I've done the bottled nutes. Almost tore my hair out.

Imagine having a crew that grew plants for you. You just harvest dry and smoke. I have a work crew over over 1 million and growing strong.
