I noticed this morning this "FIM" seedling...and I was about to top it again.
Then, I noticed there are 2 tops coming out where I missed :)
So Left it

Thanks for posting this, it looks like an excellent method. Will be trying it on some plants for sure. The results look fantastic!

After you see how strong main-lining makes your branch formations you will never leave small growths like that on the plant again. Those fim tops are weak pathways that take power away from your hub. By leaving on just that little extra "fim" the plant now sees those as the main branches to build because they are the highest on the main stem (apical dominance) ....Now those nice strong original branches will be weak and viewed as lower priority ........KILL THE FIM:singing:

O how many times those sneaky little fims manage to trick people into thinking they have something worth growing out. They always end up growing weak or at totally different rates to only get cut off later,,but for some crazy reason we chase them every time....:rolleyes:look look a fim:wideyed::clown:wha:clown:wha:clown:whaaaa:spam::bawling:

That's another reason--
for pruning mid-internode...

I suggest you let (at least a test group) of 'em go 4-6 nodes before going all the way back down.
They'll be much more robust.
You want big outdoor plants and it's important to build the skeletal structure down low right from the start--
You've got lots of time to work with 'em...

Addendumb:

I also suggest you run a test group that isn't tied down.

Without assistance they naturally form a _V_ shape,
tied down you are forcing them into a _T_ shape.

Come next September/October ~64-128 mainstems are going to weigh quite a bit, 'specially after a rain.

Which of those shapes is better for load bearing???

I don't know--
needs investigating...

On page two, clockworks posted this photo..

So I'm going to do a couple extreme "T shapes" like that..
..maybe a few with a V shape..
I Hear ya though..I figure they will need some support to keep from busting

When doing a lot of topping and training its a good idea to feed plants with nutrients that are beneficial to their structure (potassium silicate, calcium) and speed up the healing process ( B vitamins ). They also pull up less water when photosynthesis is slowed due to the plant being in repair mode so avoid over watering. A soggy soil will slow new growth by pushing out all the oxygen. I like to water with my additives a few days before topping and give the pots a chance to dry. These are just a few things to keep plants healthy and growing fast....;)
