I've got some strains that flower a little too long for my area. If I started covering them 2-3 weeks b4 they should naturally start flowering, would this trigger flowering early and allow me to finish them in my short season? Where I live my outdoor stuff realistically should finish bout 3rd week sep, will this work to trigger early, maybe cover for 12 hours with a large trash barrell or something?

It will work. You have to be diligent and do it every day. A good schedule is cover it at 6 pm and uncover as soon as it gets dark so you can't forget to uncover in the morning. You can stop around August 15 when the night is starting to increase in length and flowering will have triggered naturally.
