Medicate with an IRON?

I am currently staying in a Circus-themed hotel in Nevada. Was pretty sure I smelled something skunky when I arrived - this morning I found it.

It's the iron! There are hashy streaks on the bottom and possibly something in the water.

What for? Have I been missing a useful technique? Looks wasteful but I guess if you were feeling 'lucky'?

Seriously? We are a creative lot, aren't we? I would guess they were doing some bubble on it, all you really have to do is heat it up enough to begin emitting smoke, et voila.
