When you look at our marijuana world today—medical marijuana dispensaries, legal industrial-sized marijuana grow ops, marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington, High Times holding the Cannabis Cup in America instead of only in Amsterdam—it’s hard to believe that only a few years ago was the most horrific day in hydroponics marijuana history.

It was October 26, 1989, a day now called “Black Thursday,” when coordinated federal raids attacked dozens of hydroponics stores nationwide. The first phase of the operation the government called “Operation Green Merchant” included terrifying raids on hydroponics stores in 46 states. After that, the DEA spent two more years pursuing arrests and prosecutions against hydroponics store people, marijuana growers, and Nevil Schoenmakers, the world's first international marijuana seed seller.

By the time Operation Green Merchant was finished, nearly 1300 people had been arrested and jailed. Millions of dollars of assets seized. A thousand marijuana grow ops taken down. High Times and other marijuana magazines were hit hard. Some marijuana publications went out of business.

Operation Green Merchant still negatively affects anyone who grows medical or recreational marijuana. You can easily see why it terrified the hydroponics industry as regards marijuana growing and marijuana growers. And the result is even today most hydroponics manufacturers are afraid to openly research marijuana growing, so most hydroponics products you buy haven’t been tested on marijuana, and that does make a big difference in how those products do or don’t help your medical marijuana plants.

Superior Growing Supplies in MI was hit hard by this operation... They've made it through and are one of the biggest stores in MI, they also sued the city of Livonia for poaching and won :)

Nothig has changed (check out link). I did not find this post weird. I found it informative. Growers need to know this stuff.

Here is some testimony from grow shop owners. I bet they do this with seed banks and breeders too.
